How to Clean a Cowhide Rug

Cowhide rugs can be a beautiful addition to almost any room in your home and, if used correctly, can help to make the room have a beautiful and relaxing feel to it. If you have a cowhide rug in your home or flat, and you’re interested in keeping it beautiful, you should learn how to properly clean it. All too often people clean their cowhide rugs incorrectly which damages the rug and makes it look less than spectacular. Here are a few tips to help you to clean your cowhide rug correctly so that it stays in pristine condition.

Vacuuming

The first thing that you should know how to do is how to vacuum your cowhide rug correctly. Much of the dirt can be removed from a cowhide rug simply by giving it a regular cleaning with a vacuum. You should not, however, ever use the vacuum directly on the rug, as the bristles under the vacuum can destroy the delicate hide. Instead, use the hose attachment in order to suck up the loose dirt that is on the rug. This will help you to get rid of the basic dirt that is sitting on top of the rug and will keep it looking beautiful for a long time. If you’re not comfortable vacuuming it, you can take it outside, hang it over a railing or a sturdy clothesline, and shake it or beat it a bit in order to get the loose dirt and dust out of it.

Spot Washing

If you happen to spill something on your cowhide rug, don’t feel bad – almost everyone makes a mess occasionally. The best way to get rid of this spot is to spot clean it, which is actually very easy. Take a cloth and immerse it in a bit of soapy room temperature water. Make sure that you wring out the cloth so that it is only slightly damp. Then wipe the area that needs to be cleaned with the cloth in the direction of the hair. You can use a spatula or butter knife to remove solid messes from the rug.

Washing

If you do have to wash your cowhide rug, avoid putting it in the washing machine. Instead, take your rug and put it in a bath tub filled halfway with cool water that you have put about a cap full of baby shampoo is. Put the rug face down and gently agitate it so that you are able to get the dirt out of the rug. Then rinse the rug, again in cool water, and set it out to dry. Many say that it is best to use a dehumidifier in the room where the rug is drying so as to remove the moisture. It is a good idea to avoid putting this type of rug in direct sun as it may discolour the rug. If, after washing, the rug is looking flat, you can always take a stiff plastic brush and use it to brush the rug to perk it up again.
