I Want to Stop Drinking: A Good Reminder to Help Yourself Quit

How many times have you told yourself, “I want to stop drinking”? How many times have you said it, whether addressed to yourself or to somebody else? If your answer is many times, don’t feel frustrated because this is actually a good thing. This phrase, this very sentence, is a very good index. It is a reliable indicator of the desire to kick the bad habit. Do not be disheartened by the number of times you tried or failed or relapsed. These things do not, in the very slightest, affect whether or not you will succeed. The resolution is there inside you. You only need to let it run its course, unimpeded. The important thing is not to lose sight of that resolve no matter what. Do what it takes to reinforce this desire to stop drinking every day, every chance you get. Be vigilant in safeguarding your commitment to quit, and before long, you will have succeeded.

This is a very powerful mantra. Keep on repeating the phrase “I want to stop drinking” to yourself as often as you can. It might seem a little juvenile but it actually helps. It serves as a good motivator that reinforces your commitment from time to time. You will need to do this a lot, especially when you start out. Most efforts in trying to quit drinking had fallen in vain because so many lose sight of that want to stop drinking. A party is coming up, or a disappointment made you sad, there is always some rationalization that the mind can come up with to make “just one drink” ok. Telling yourself you want to stop drinking all the time is a powerful counter. The ‘want to stop drinking’ must be stronger than ‘the want to drink’. This is the bottom line equation that you have to keep. If you could do this, then you will succeed.

However, this mantra alone will not pull you through. You need to arm yourself with powerful ammunition with you, as you eventually will, battle with yourself during this process. You need to know why you want to do it and keep that in mind. Somewhere along the way, you will have to convince yourself to stick to this course of action in order to succeed. The best way to do that is rationally.

The rational man in you will not concede to a mere statement that you want to, we all know, even if only on a subconscious level, want is not a very operative word. Wants are on the lowest levels in the hierarchy or needs. You have to understand this want, and find out the real reason why you want to stop. It has to be something concrete and important enough for you to sacrifice for. Make your mantra complete. You should say, “I want to stop drinking because…” Concretize your mantra with real reasons to stop drinking. These reasons will ultimately keep your grasp firmly on your goal and will eventually get you there. Before you know it, you would have convinced yourself that you really do want to quit.
