Is Finding a Suitable Nursing-RN Job Harder Even During the Nursing Shortage?

The sad fact about a new Nursing-RN individual is the hunt for the first job. Although the nursing shortage has been acknowledged by the medical and health care industry, the qualifications for these new professionals to enter a job position is getting higher for their reach.

The Nursing-RN or Registered Nurse fresh professionals who have survived the academic and clinical education, trainings, and professional licensing examinations are expected to bridge the gap between the demand of nursing jobs and the lack of nursing professionals. But sad fact is, most of the registered nurses are having a hard time in finding their first jobs which is quite contrary to the claims of the nursing shortage demands.

Way back in 2007, a reliable source announced that nursing shortages in the US has caused deaths of patients and thus measures should be taken to increase the supply of nursing professionals. With this in mind, medical institutions gave scholarship grants for nursing courses for their constituents. High school graduates opted to have nursing courses in the hope of getting assured decent paying jobs when they finish and take on further qualifications to become registered nurses. Everyone was into the hype of becoming qualified nurses to lessen the gap of demand and supply of the nursing profession.

But in 2010, the evident jobless registered nurses is telling a different story from three years ago. Medical facilities does not hire these fresh registered nurses for their skills and qualifications right away as expected. What is truly happening in the nursing shortage and the status of employment of young nursing professionals?

Some journalist who have studied the behavior of the demand of nurses in the US have claimed that nursing shortage has been replaced with job shortage in reality and it is not given the right media exposure so that the people involved in the issue could be warned and be aware of the situation. Further into the issue, an explanation for the lapses of nursing demand updates was answered by the point communication person of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Mr. Robert Rosseter in May 2010. He discussed that fresh registered nurses are not getting hired because of the limitations of job openings. Job nursing positions are still filled with aging nurses who hold on to their jobs, part time nurses who went full time in work, and hospitals hiring freezes to keep their costs down. The onset of the economic crisis might also have been a factor why restricted job nurse hirings are evident across the US.

But nursing schools are still accepting a considerable number of students in their institutions when they know that the demand has been less demanding compared to three years ago. Officials say that nursing shortage is a persistent situation and they only educate and train nursing students because they take a proactive stand in defense of the coming perceived nursing shortage in the coming years.

The reality of getting employed when you are a fresh registered nurse is minimal at this point in time. But you have alternative opportunities to practice your profession but with understandably lower wages. You can give your professional skills to community health center volunteer centers as a volunteer or a part time resident nurse. Home nursing can also be an option for the time being. Do not forget to practice your profession so that you will not loose your edge in the industry and become a top choice when hiring picks up again.
