I own a beauty salon. When I received a call from an organization that helps pamper cancer patients, I jumped at the chance to participate. From the start, I wanted to make these ladies feel special and escape from the monotony and pain of their treatment regimen.

What could I do to really pamper them?

Then, the idea hit me. I could pick these ladies up in limos and make them feel like a million bucks.

It worked. When ladies would call to make their appointments, we started to tell them we’d pick them up at their homes or at their doctors’ offices. Often, they would come to the salon after treatment because they said it made them feel better.

But they had no idea we were planning to pick them up in a limo. When we arrived at their door in a sleek, black limo, their eyes said it all. It was the surprise of their life, and they enjoyed every minute of it.

For me, helping these cancer patients is part of their treatment. A lot of them come looking for wigs, but hair loss isn’t the only side effect of cancer treatment. Chemotherapy and radiation can leave patients’ skin tired and sagging and their bodies bloated.

It might seem that when your life is on the line, a few skin defects shouldn’t matter, but this is hardly the case for cancer patients. These ladies already feel awful, so looking awful just doesn’t help When we diminish their physical symptoms, we’re also pampering them emotionally. When they feel pretty and special and loved, that is a step forward in their treatment.

That’s why I love picking them up in limos. These ladies spend so much time at the doctors’ being poked and prodded like tomatoes in the produce section, but when a chauffeur opens the door for them and invites them inside the limo, they feel like stars. Instead of feeling like victims and patients, they feel like guests of honor.

Which, to us, is exactly what they are.

What’s even better is seeing how people are pulling together to help my salon afford the limos. First off, the limo company has offered a deep, deep discount on all the rides for our cancer patients. Plus, many of our clients have pitched in funds to so we can keep providing the limo service. They’ve seen our ladies come in their limos all smiling and happy, despite their hair loss, despite the pain and nausea, and it’s touched them.

I used to think limos were just for high rollers and superstars. I realize that I was missing the big picture. A limo makes a person feel special, pampered, valued. That’s why the superstars use them. That’s also why regular people can take advantage of what a limo says to make others feel like belles of the ball.

All our cancer patients have a battle ahead of them. The limo rides give boost their spirits so they can keep fighting.
