Limos Prove to Journalist That Limos Help People Succeed

I’ve always been cynical about big spending. This is probably due in part to my upbringing: My grandparents raised me, and since they grew up in the Depression, they valued hard work and perseverance over money. Plus, as a journalist, I don’t have that much money to spend on big-ticket items.

Then my editor assigned me a story on limos in LA. I balked. I always thought people who insisted on driving around in long, expensive vehicles just didn’t have anything better to spend their money on. Nevertheless, I took the assignment. You don’t say no to my boss. Anyway, I smugly thought it would give me a great chance to prove, once and for all, that renting limos is just not worth the price tag.

I take that back now. During the course of my research, I got to ride around in plenty of limos. I can see why people use them now. When I would get out of my 1995 sedan, people would barely see me. I was a nobody. Boy, did things change when people saw me ride up in a limo. They treated me with respect, they paid attention to my questions, and they bent over backwards to put get me the information I needed for my story. Suddenly, I was a somebody, all because I was gliding around LA in a limo.

Does this mean human beings are shallow? To a certain extent, but more than anything, my experiences show the power of first impressions. Businesspeople, movie stars and athletes — especially in an image-conscious place like LA — hire limos because they help them garner the respect and attention they need to succeed. They are harnessing the way the human mind responds to first impressions. And, yes, sometimes we humans can be shallow. However, if you want to reach your goals, you are better off taking advantage of how the mind works than pontificating against it.

A limo is a particularly good way to get respect. It is synonymous with success and professionalism. When I rode up to a meeting in my rusty, old car, people’s impression of the car rubbed off on me. My car isn’t impressive, so neither was I. In contrast, by arriving in a limo, I told them I was worth their time. I got what I needed because they were able to see my value.

Probably more importantly, as I would slide out of a limo, I simply felt better. I stood taller, walked more confidently, and gave off an air of wherewithal. No one would question my presence. By exuding this positive energy, positive things would happen. It’s all about the power of the mind. Theirs and mine.

How is this going to change my life? Well, I can’t afford to buy a limo. However, the next time there’s an important celebration with all the bigwigs in journalism, I’ll rent a limo. I want to further my career. If a limo can help me do that, then why not reap the benefits?
