Meribel on a Budget

If this is your first trip to Meribel, or even if you’ve been before, this article will give you a few keen pointers on how to stick to your budget while in the resort. There are many different and exciting things to do cheaply (and sometimes even for free), that will have you dying to get out of your ski chalets. Meribel hosts a variety of great, inexpensive activities, so here are a few ways in which to enjoy your time there, while not bankrupting yourself!

Freely Explore

If you have spent all your money getting to the slopes, then take some time out from the piste to explore the great surrounding area around your ski chalets. Meribel has some great walks specially prepared for you to enjoy which are available all year round. In winter, take the circular walk that enters the Tueda Nature Reserve or climb to la Traie mountain refuge. The trails are all groomed after every snowfall, so you do not need snowshoes or special equipment to use them. However, if you are more adventurous, whack on a pair of snowshoes and ramble around off the beaten track; but make sure you know where you are going, as it is very easy to get lost in the terrain. In the spring and summer, there are more walks available and you are presented with a delicious variety of walking treats. You can get a free map with a list detailing which trails are open from the Tourist Office, as well as information about the shuttle buses, which are free and run throughout the valley.

Lift Pass Reductions

Lift passes are always a necessary expense while on a skiing holiday, but you may be eligible for a reduction on your pass. If you are a family, a senior or a junior, then there are some great deals to be had. Anyone over the age of 75 can ski for free, and anyone under the age of 5 is also exempt from paying. If you are between 65 and 75, you will pay a reduced rate which is around 10-15% off, and if you are between the ages of 5 and 12, you will receive around a 25% reduction on your ski pass. Families get some great deals too and it is well worth checking these rates before you begin skiing -then all there is left to do is get to one of the many slopes which surround your ski chalets. Meribel ski passes are hands-free, so you just pop them in your pocket and the doors will all open for you.

Free Entertainment

The local tourist office is a brilliant friend to skiers on a budget. You are wrong if you think lack of funds means you have to stay in your ski chalets, Meribel tourist office can point you in the direction of free entertainment suitable for everyone. Some of the freebies include barbecues, Shiatsu lessons, walking tours, drinks and lumberjack contests. They even have a regular Friday night entertainment spot, provided by the participants in the circus, and fencing classes during the week. So when you get to Meribel be sure to make the tourist office your first point of call and grab yourself a program of events.
