Mobile Game Review: Doodle Pool Game

The Doodle Pool app for iPhone is an interesting mixture of cartoonish graphics and billiards, both of which are increasingly popular with the masses. This iPhone app costs nothing to download and use, the Doodle Pool iPhone app offers various game play rules for both the US and UK in addition to a “Time Attack” mode.

Features of Doodle Pool

This game is a simple game of strategy that pool players know well. With a one or two player game, players can play traditional 8-ball using UK or US rules in addition to US 9-ball. The player can touch the screen anywhere to start the game and to make a shot, the user simply drags his finger across the screen to aim and shoot.

To aim, the game gives a white outline directing where the ball will go, more or less. By touching the ball the user wants to hit, the iPhone shows with the line where that ball will go. As the player moves his finger, the colored line moves so that he can see where his aim will hit the ball. While bank shots and balls in the way of the cue ball are not entirely outlined in a way that makes it easy to see the shot, these shots can be taken, it is just a bit more difficult to do so.

The trick to making the shots and winning the game is a combination of aim and strength. The way the user drags his finger determines how hard he hits the balls. For example, when the proper aim is found, dragging the finger across in a longer movement will “hit’ the cue ball stronger and dragging the finger for a shorter length will “hit” the cue lighter. The strength measurement bar is located at the top of the pool table and increases with the length of the finger movement, so there is no guesswork involved, with the exception of knowing how strong to hit the ball.

The graphics are of a simple pool table with graph-like paper surrounding the background. However, graphics included during real game play include explosions of star clusters when the user sinks a ball. Each level against the iPhone computer has a specific avatar and the user can switch players during game play and choose from beginner to difficult.

Downfalls in the Doodle Pool Game

The two-player game is simpler than the game against the “computer,” or the iPhone in this case. Keep in mind that if the user misses a shot against the iPhone, the iPhone will eventually win, even at the easiest levels of game play because as soon as the computer receives a shot, it is impossible for it to miss. Additionally, when playing on the small iPhone screen, it is difficult to determine which ball is being aimed at, even though the proper one is highlighted. It is easy to aim at the wrong ball and receive bad marks for the bad move.

Overall, the Doodle Pool app for iPhone receives a user rating of two and a half stars. This is a fun game for those who like to play pool and the doodle graphics are simple, but still nice enough to make a lasting impression. This is a great game, once the user can get the hang of using the controls and recommended for all ages.
