Older Women and Driving

There will come a time in the lives of all women when we will have someone, a child or grandchild or even worse an officer of the law, suggest to us that we give up driving. Considering that women have fewer devastating crashes than men and fewer crashes overall, think carefully before you acquiesce. Insurance companies are favorably disposed toward women drivers and offer good deals, so do not give up your independence easily.

The type of accident women tend to have is usually the fender-bender kind. Of course it cause s damage to the vehicles involved and may even be a little scary, but it is what happens to all of us at times.

Years ago an elderly woman drove into the back of my car. It was a minor knock but had the potential to have been more serious as I was stopped a train crossing at the time. The poor woman was apologetic, but what shocked me was that she was afraid of what her son’s response would be. How sad it is as a mature woman to be at the mercy of your son’s opinions.
This accident happened out in the countryside, and there was fear in her eyes at the thought of losing her license. Clear she anticipated a major change to her lifestyle.

How are you going to manage your life once you stop driving? Are you going to sit at home and watch TV? If you did not do that when you could drive and had a lot of independence, don’t think it will appeal to you greatly once you are asked to stop driving. Not all of us have the experience of the lead character in “Driving Miss Daisy”. We don’t have an intelligent, handsome and sensitive employee who will step up and take over the task allowing us to preserve our dignity.

It may seem fatuous to bring the theme of a movie into the discussion of such an important decision as ceasing to drive, but art and theater at their best echo real life.

If you have the misfortune to be involved in an accident, do not allow others to bully you into thinking that you are no longer capable of driving. This type of reaction does happen usually because the person doing it is concerned for the safety of the older driver. But if you still feel capable of driving, make that clear. Get an eyesight test, talk to your family doctor about your state of health and stand your ground if you get the support of health professionals. More teenage drivers have accidents than elderly women.

Most auto insurers would rather insure a 77 year old woman than a 17 year old one. Accept that you have made a mistake, as anyone can. Take a safe driver course and get back out there. You do not want to spend the next 20 years in front of the TV. You want to enjoy life and you want a good insurer to offer you affordable auto insurance.
