People to People Sports Ambassador Program

Both of my daughters swam for many years. In addition to the great workout they received while they were swimming, was the many friends that they made along the way. One of my daughter’s friends on her high school team said that she is going to participate in the People to People Sports Ambassador Program.

When she approached us and told us she was holding a People to People Fundraiser to raise the money for her trip it really me curious about the program.

I was not sure what she was talking about, since I have never been exposed to any type of program like that before. She was excited because she was going to the Netherlands to train and complete in swimming. I was a bit skeptical, because, Elizabeth was good, but by no means a world class swimmer. Well I decided to take it upon myself to research the topic.

As I researched the People to People Sports Ambassador Program I became really excited. This was an opportunity for students to become immersed in a different culture while training and competing in their favorite sport. Not only will they get to stay in Holland, they will also be with other students around the world. Last year students from 29 countries were represented.

The People to People Sports Ambassador Program began 50 years ago during the Eisenhower Administration. President Eisenhower believed that if people could visit each others’ homes, attend their schools, and see their places of worship, then the misunderstandings, misperceptions, and resulting suspicions – which were making war a viable option – would disappear. He wanted people to know and understand that while we are all very different, our values, goals, and day-to-day issues are very much the same.

The program begins with a 3-5 day training session that will help the athlete get to know their coaches. This will allow the coaches to determine how students work together to make the event as meaningful as possible. After the training session, the students will be allowed to compete. During this time, students will be able to visit world famous historical sights.

I haven’t been able to determine the price at the moment. I have a feeling it may be a bit pricey, because the students are staying in 4 star accommodations, instead of dormitory type settings. But I will do what ever I can to raise the money to give my daughter the chance of a lifetime.

As for raising the money I have found there are some great fundraising ideas available including many geared to individuals that need to raise a lot of money. There are some that offer extraordinary profits and some that cost nothing to get started. There are others that do not require much out of pocket money.

The main point is that you should not worry about the money. The trip is a trip of a lifetime and there are some great fundraising ideas waiting out there for you. So focus instead on your student and the opportunity and not on the money.
