Sometimes Life’s No Picnic, So Have a “Bednic”

Careers, kids, extended family, even friends, or just the daily grind – all this can get sucked up into a maelstrom of activity. But what gets left behind? What about each other? You’ve formed this life together. Have you figured out a way to keep it as special and wonderful as you had planned, as you thought it should be? What have you done to show each other the special attention you each deserve? You both need a time to relax and just enjoy each other’s company. That sort of got pushed aside, right?

If you’re feeling that something’s missing in life, it’s probably the camaraderie, the friendship, the personality of that very wonderful person with whom you decided to share your life, however long or short a time ago. Approach that person in a new and unique way. And don’t worry about details. Details can squash the fun. You won’t need reservations, you won’t have to pile into the car. Just set aside a weekend. You’re going to turn a special place in your home into something even more special.

Kissing and K.I.S.S. (Keeping It Simple, Silly!) is how you’re going to spend a day this weekend. You’re going to have a picnic – without leaving the house. As noted, simplicity is the key. Across the bed, or across the bedroom floor, spread out a quilt, a blanket, or even that old tablecloth you have used on real picnics. Add a few pillows and settle in for the rest of your Saturday or Sunday. (Send the kids to grandma’s. Unplug the phones. Disable the cells.)

Have a little detoxification time. Watch movies, play a board game, deal out some cards. Or, do nothing at all except talk, laugh, remember who you used to be with each other. Put aside the work week, the obligations, the little daily annoyances that often take up too much time in your lives. Be only where you are – with each other.

Don’t forget – a picnic (or bednic) means food. When your stomachs start to growl – head for the kitchen. The secret here is “grab and go.” Don’t forget the old adage: “A loaf of bread, a jug of wine, and thee.” Keeping it simple and spontaneous is the goal. Grab that tin of sardines, snatch that bottle of olives, fetch that bleu cheese that no one wanted at last week’s gathering.

Wine! Or even a shaker of martinis will add a necessarily nice touch. Relaxation, suspension, distension are the goals. Don’t worry too much if the cheese doesn’t go with the wine, or if crackers seem plebeian next to a well-turned martini. The more opened jars, the better. The more cracker crumbs, the better. Fruit is always a good choice. Peel oranges, scoop out avocados, drag out that half of cantaloupe and chop it up in situ.

As the day wags on, don’t watch the clock. The nice time will be over too soon as it is. Go get the watercolors the kids never use and paint each other’s pictures. Or paint each other. Or dote over a favorite movie, rewinding scenes and really analyzing them. Practice a speech you have to give at work next week, only in the nude. Just remember, you’re both in your own park, you both set the admission price, you both decide the ride limits, you both know who wins or loses. You both will win, of course.

So, have a picnic-style get-together. In your own place. It’s a multi-course meal, and it doesn’t involve only food. It involves you, your significant other, your imaginations, and, of course, a little adventurism. Bon Appetite!
