The Pain of Home Foreclosure

This past week, I learned of four different families who are behind on their mortgage payments and are facing foreclosure on their homes. My heart just hurt at the news, because of the pain I know that these folks will have to go through. Approximately one out of three homes sold in the United States in the first quarter of 2010 was a foreclosure property. Home foreclosure causes stress on many different levels including: waiting for the inevitable eviction from your home, changes in life style, your reputation, your credit report. Friendships typically change and background checks for job employment are affected. The stress of going through a home foreclosure can also affect your health and sometimes your marriage.

For a woman, this experience can be especially traumatic. This is HER home! Her home is where the dearest of relationships are developed, nurtured and cared for. Her home is where her roots have been established with coworkers, neighbors, friends and family. She has worked hard decorating and taking care of her home. Her home expresses her personality and interests. She has invested herself into this home from painting the interior walls, to the placement of flowers and shrubs as well as keeping the weeds pulled. She’s celebrated holidays here with her family, neighbors and friends. This is her HOME! Her home is almost like an extension of herself. Sometimes the children have become an integral part of a community with school, sports and churches only to be uprooted to start all over again. Often making the move from a foreclosed home involves making a move to some temporary housing while the former homeowners get their finances in order.

It’s entirely appropriate here, though, to mention the benefits of home foreclosure. The stress of being unable to meet the mortgage payment and waiting for the “other shoe to drop,” is finally over. It’s time to move on. It’s time for a fresh start. It’s time to re-group and begin again. Making a move to a home that is affordable, whether it’s a rental or a purchase, is totally freeing. Being in control of your finances and taking assessment of what you have and what you can financially do is challenging, but also liberating! This can also be a great time to teach your children about the importance of financial responsibility. So many of us have spoiled our children and allowed them to have whatever they want, whenever they want it. Frequently, this actually turns out to be good “life lesson” for them.

While some folks lose their homes because of financial mistakes they’ve made; several of us are struggling due to no fault of our own. Lots of us have lost a job or had dramatic cuts in pay because the employers we work for are also struggling to make ends meet. You can be doing all the right things financially and still find yourself in a financial mess! Regardless of the CAUSE of the catastrophe requiring foreclosure, we’re still in a mess! Often this season of life is like a pruning process. Our roses are pruned each year so the new growth next season is even more beautiful and prolific. During these periods, sometimes the only thing we can do is to turn to God and ask for his help/intervention during this season of life and wisdom to properly use the resources he has given us.
