The Panic Attack Symptoms
Panicking at a certain time or situation is a natural response by the body when faced with dangers or stressful events in life. Panic attacks are usually spontaneous feelings of terror that are sudden and inevitable due to the lack of warning. People who experience panic attack symptoms sometimes think that they are having a heart attack or they are dying. These attacks can happen even while a person is asleep but they occur more often during the day, at waking hours. People who have nocturnal panic attacks are more prone to respiratory diseases due to panicking. They wake up suddenly and feel extreme fear and dread. They also are at a risk for depression and different types of psychiatric disorder compared to those who do not suffer from nocturnal panic episodes. A panic attack usually is brief, but its duration can vary from one person to another. The average duration is ten minutes to half an hour. People who experience panic attacks usually have a subsequent attack. However, if these attacks progress and happen even without apparent triggers, it may lead to a condition called panic disorder.
Panic attacks can be caused by several factors like medical conditions and certain illnesses. Medical conditions that cause these attacks include thyroid problems and anemia. Medicines, like anti-malaria and other stimulants, may also trigger panicking and anxiety. There are also reports that food aspartame and other types of food additives can develop these symptoms, but there is still need for further research regarding the theory. With these, it is important to recognize the panic attack symptoms that are usually experienced by many such as fast or racing heartbeat or palpitations, an upset stomach, chest pains, dizziness or nausea, difficulty breathing, a tingling sensation in the hands or hand numbness, chills, sweating, shaking and trembling, hot flashes, a severe feeling of horror, and uncontrollable nervousness. Being anxious and fearful, the next episode of a panic attack can be unpredictable. It can possibly happen even without any underlying causes.
Panic attack symptoms can be treated with medication, but this can be somehow habit-forming if done regularly. It may also cause undesirable side effects, so it is important to first consult a doctor before taking any medications. They may just be needed from time to time and not on a regular basis. Medication is more effective when taken together with therapy sessions – such will reduce the risk of experiencing the symptoms or having a relapse. Many people who suffer from these attacks respond well to therapy and medication combined. Having a healthy lifestyle also helps in preventing panic attacks and panic disorders. Making sure that you have time each day to relax and have fun will greatly improve one’s well-being and also lessens further worrying. If you are experiencing major events in your life that turns everything upside down — like marriage or having kids or starting in a new job — these stressors may bring more worrying and panicking but with therapy and medication, panic attacks will be prevented from turning into panic disorder.
