The Wildest Paid Writing Gig in the World
I’ve always been a writer. I’ve always loved it, and done pretty well at it.
Too well, sometimes. In 9th grade, I got accused of plagiarism because my teacher thought my writing was too good for a 9th grader. What I remember most is her contention that 9th graders never use “amongst.” So, I worked the word “amongst” into every paper I turned in from that point forward.
Then in college, I wrote poetry. Even published my own book. And, competed in spoken-word poetry competitions.
I had a ball while I was doing it (even got some rave reviews), but there was one big problem.
All this writing I was doing wasn’t paid writing.
Even my book, which I hoped to make a few bucks off of, actually lost me money. I had invested about $500 to get it self-published, and I sold about $400 worth, mostly to friends and family. I still have about a dozen sitting on my shelf – and they’ll likely remain there for a long time.
Because I wasn’t getting paid to write, it always had to be back-burner. Never something I imagined doing for a living.
So, I took on other work. Instead of finding paid writing gigs, I went where I knew I could get money quick. (After all, when the rent’s due, it’s hard to think about pursuing your passions.)
So, I sold newspapers. Did telephone fundraising for nonprofits. Answered customer service calls for the local utility company.
Though these gigs left me feeling dismal, because ultimately, I just wanted to be paid to write.
I’m a writer, darn it, and that’s what I want to do.
That’s when, almost by accident, I stumbled on to …
The Wildest Paid Writing Gig In The World!
As a writer, I’m an avid reader, too. Always on the lookout for new ideas, inspiration, and entertainment.
So, it shouldn’t be a surprise that when I found a book promising a lavish lifestyle where you can get paid for writing, I picked it up. I had to check it out.
While I’d been caught up in fiction and poetry, this book introduced me to a whole new world of paid writing – a world where your writing can earn you well over six-figures a year, and as much as a million or more, even if you never have a best-selling book.
In fact, this new world of writing was willing to pay writers thousands of dollars for just a few pages of writing … And then, pay royalties on that writing when it does its job well.
And, here’s something important … This wild paid writing gig has something that was even more important to me. The companies that pay for this writing really RESPECT writers for the work they do – and trust their opinion.
So, by now I figure you’re probably getting a little curious about what “The Wildest Paid Writing Gig In The World!” is … And, understandably so. I went rabid with curiosity as soon as I discovered it.
Well, here it is …
Get Paid Writing Advertising Copy
That’s right – all of those advertisements you see in your mailbox, online, on TV, and elsewhere are all written by somebody. All of those started out as paid writing assignments – and you could be the one cashing in.
“But wait,” you say, “I don’t want to sell out to a big corporation. That’s not me. I wouldn’t be happy.”
I understand. In fact, I felt that way, too. And, many of my peers who get paid to write advertising felt the same way as well.
But, what we discovered is that you don’t have to work for major corporations (you can if you want). There are plenty of independent-minded – even a bit “renegade” – entrepreneurs who need the same skill (and many of these entrepreneurs see even MORE value in what you offer than the major corporations do).
In fact, many entrepreneurs who offer paid writing gigs to advertising copywriters expect them to think independently, and approach their writing looking for a creative “big idea” that will get readers swept up and carried all the way to the conclusion.
The advertisements I’ve written are some of my most creative writing work ever – plus, I’m getting paid well for writing them!
And, the cool thing is that even though your pay scale for the writing you do is so different from writing fiction, poetry, or other types of creative writing … The writing itself is not that different.
In fact, a halfway decent writer who’s willing to open their mind and learn proven techniques for writing advertising that generates sales can quickly go from nobody to somebody in this field.
And, a big field it is, too. Direct marketing – the industry where you can earn some of the highest rates (and those royalties, too) for your paid writing – accounts for 54.3% of advertising spending, or $153.3 Billion, according to the Direct Marketing Association. And, a good chunk of that $153.3 Billion is paid out as writing gigs for advertising copywriters.
Oh yeah, and I’ve become much more independent since I discovered that I can get paid writing advertisements. I work from home, often in my pajamas. I work with the clients I choose, on the projects I choose. And, my time is my own – on nice summer days, I like to take the afternoon off to go swimming with my family, and there’s nobody to tell me no!
Now that I’ve discovered this opportunity, I couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.
