They go well with children and other pets. They have well-behaved, loyal, sweet, gentle and peaceful temperament. They are never moody or harsh. They always seem friendly and kind in their behaviors.

Most of the dogs can be trained easily but it could be somehow difficult with basset hounds. However it is not impossible. It takes time, patience and willingness. Learn these steps and tips for potty training your basset hound effectively.

1. Helping her with crates
Don’t ever push your Basset hound forcefully into the crate and lock the door. It makes her feel like a prison. Instead put some treat inside the crate to let her find it there and when she moves into the crate, praise her and make her feel comfortable. Make crate a fun place so that she enjoys staying there for longer period. After this habit is developed, it will be easy for you to know the timings she needs to eliminate.

2. Potty timing
It is important that you make regular access to your Basset hound to the potty area to let her know the right places. Most common timings dogs need to go are:

– Within 30 minutes after eating
– Soon after they wake up from the nap
– Early in the morning
– At playing times
– At late night

3. Learning signals
There are some signs they make when they need to relieve themselves like whining, circling the floor, waiting at the door, sniffing around or some suspicious behavior. Immediately take her outside when you notice any of these things.

4. Using special commands while taking her outside
Use special commands like “go potty” or “go outside” consistently when you are taking her to her potty spot. This helps them learn that it’s time to engage into the business. When she finishes, praise her with reward or treat.

5. Don’t give up
Even after your hard efforts, there are chances of accidents. Your basset hound might go to wrong places or at wrong times. But don’t give up or punish her. Instead loudly say “No” to distract her attention and quickly move her outside. If things have happened inside the house, then clean the potty at once so that the odor doesn’t attract her to repeat the same at the same place.
