Both the islands, though very diverse in history and culture, are united politically. The two islands did not have much scope for mining but they definitely took advantage of the oil reserves that they do possess. For years, the economy of the two islands was limited to agriculture and manufacturing and now a small portion is contributed by the tourism industry.
There are numerous lodging options on the islands which are occupied by nearly 200 thousand tourists each year and that too during the Carnival.

The islands have had a deep impact of the Indian style of cooking which is the most predominant one in the area. Spicy curry dishes are an all time favorite at both the places. Spanish cuisines are also very popular among the locals. The impact of this culture is visible in the food that is prepared and also on the eating habits of the people.
Though the two islands are different in their lifestyles and resources, yet they share the same political thought and stay united.
