Ways to Make Your Wedding Processional Special
The processional during the marriage ceremony is certainly one of the most moving parts of any wedding. It is the moment when the groom and the assembled guests all get their first look at the bride in her long white gown, bridal veil, and crystal necklace. There is the wonderful anticipation of when the bride reaches the altar and first meets with her groom. Enhance the inherent beauty of the ceremony by doing a few of these things which will make your wedding processional even more special.
In most wedding ceremonies, we think of the bride as being escorted down the aisle by her father. In Jewish wedding tradition, however, the bride is escorted down the aisle by both her mother and her father, with one parent on each side of her. This is a wonderful idea for a wedding ceremony, no matter what your religious affiliation. Being escorted down the aisle by both parents is a lovely way to make your mom a true part of the processional. The groom can also be escorted down the aisle by his parents, rather than walking to the altar from the side. The symbolism of involving all the parents is very beautiful.
Another way to make the wedding processional extra special is to use an aisle runner. The runner should be laid only after the bridesmaids and flower girls have walked down the aisle, so that the bride alone will march down the special runner. It is a great way to add a bit more fanfare and anticipation to the bride’s grand entrance. Most florists have standard white runners for rent, but if you really want to make a statement, consider a personalized aisle runner. A large silver monogram with a little beading for sparkle would be fabulous when the bride is wearing a formal beaded silk gown with a crystal necklace and headpiece. For a more whimsical effect, have a few lines of romantic poetry hand painted on the runner in a large script.
Most brides proceed down the aisle to the accompaniment of “The Wedding March” or another traditional tune played by the church organist. Instead of the standard instrumental music, why not have your march accompanied by a soloist? She could sing a traditional song like “Ava Maria” or a favorite like “At Last”, just to name a few appropriate song choices. At one wedding which I attended, the bride walked down the aisle while the daughter of the groom sang a beautiful solo, and it was so moving it gave everyone goose bumps. Just be sure to check with your officiant for a church wedding, as they may have restrictions on which songs are permitted.
Something else you can do to make your processional special is to have a bridal party comprised of many children, rather than bridesmaids. Let the little ones walk with the bride as she processes down the aisle, tossing rose petals all around her. Or have each child proceed up the aisle before the bride, and wait at the altar to hand her a single flower when she arrives. The large group of children is sure to give the ceremony a very joyous feeling, and is a wonderful way to include all of your cherished nieces, nephews, and godchildren in your special day.
There are plenty of other ways that you can make your wedding processional special. A candle light procession for an evening wedding could be truly magical, for instance. Whichever elements you choose to include in your ceremony, you can be sure that the extra details will make your wedding even more memorable.
