Many people are encouraged by their doctors to lose weight. Obesity can attribute to a number of health problems and puts a person more at risk for developing health complications such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other diseases. However, if you have ever tried to lose weight before, you know that it can be a difficult task. Changing habits and everyday routines takes a lot of dedication and work. These following tips can help you find ways to incorporate healthier habits into your routine and lose weight.

1. Find a new workout video. So many of us get bored doing the same old exercise routines over and over again. Boredom eventually leads to quitting. So try to change up your routine. The next time you’re at the video store or the library, pick up a new Self Defense DVD. These programs can make learning martial arts moves exciting, but they also get you moving and increase your flexibility. If martial arts moves aren’t your thing, then look for a new yoga workout video or try learning a new style of dance. The important thing is to challenge yourself and to not let yourself get bored.

2. Change your diet. Try new foods. A lot of people eat the same fried foods and fast food meals because they like them. But there are probably a lot of foods out there that you don’t even know you like. The next time you are at the grocery store look for whole, raw foods that you have never eaten before and give them a try. If you don’t like it, move on to something else. Don’t let your taste buds get bored. Make a goal to eat more fruits and vegetables every day and switch to water instead of sodas loaded with sugars and high fructose corn syrup.

3. Get plenty of sleep. It seems counter-intuitive doesn’t it? The fact is that getting the right amount of sleep is a must if your body is going to recover from exercise. If you feel sluggish during the day because you did not get enough sleep the night before, then the chances are you won’t even feel like getting outside for that walk and hopping on the treadmill in the evening. Stick to a routine and try to get 8 hours of sleep at the same time every night.

4. Be positive. No one is perfect, but you are more likely to fail if you don’t have the right attitude. When you slip up, acknowledge it and move on. Try to think of ways to prevent future slip ups, and do your best not to dwell on negative thoughts and emotions. Bad feelings and stress are triggers for people to start eating high-calorie foods.

5. Reduce stress in your life. Take time out for yourself and remember to take deep breaths and stay calm. Stress often leads to eating and can trigger depressed emotions. Do something nice for yourself. Take a leisurely walk and a nice hot bath.
