Why Soccer Players Are More Dedicated Towards Their Club Than Their Country

Football is the most popular and followed game around the globe and the craze of the game is not just limited to world cup playing nations alone. The top nations battle it out for ultimate football glory every four years in the crowning football event, the world cup. The fan-following for the hard-working football players is also as crazy as it gets. But most of these soccer players shoot to fame not because of national glory but by their performance at their respective clubs. And just when you start to expect these domestic club-shone stars to shine in the national squad, the whole star-studded team collapses to a black hole. Italy, France, England etc. These teams not only have superstars playing at every positions of their formation but their domestic leagues are also hugely popular and even then these nations failed to show their class at the crowning event. So what inspires them to play it right at the domestic level?

The quality of player does not change with the event he plays in, what changes is the performance.

The club level competition is equally fierce in these nations, if not more than the world events. The club competitions are played every year. Each season lasts for a span of nine months. Week in week out, the players strive it hard for the domestic glory. The price of a player goes up or down according to his seasonal performance. Big money is involved in these famous domestic leagues and though denied, is the prime attraction to the players.

The clubs, who buy different players from various countries, are the home to these players all season long. Fans from all around, watch these club matches for their football idols and support their teams with true heart. Players work hard to maintain their place in the starting eleven of the club team squad, which is not an easy job considering the super stiff competition in the squad itself.

A bad performance at club level might cost a player his place in the club team. The fans also tend to get on the back of the players who fail to perform well at their club. This eventually can cost him his place in the national squad as the selection for national teams is majorly based on the players performance in the league. However, a bad performance in an international event can in no way affect his position in the club. These international events are short-lived and people tend to forget them, especially the ones in which their nation fails to deliver. Criticism happens for a while and then it stops.

Most international players play the league in other countries and hence they hardly are around in their home country. A bad performance at an international event may disappoint a player but can never hamper his fan following at the club, where he stays the whole season long.

Also, it is mighty difficult for players, who maintain their focus for the same clean and tidy form throughout the season at club level, to give their proper hundred percent again to the national squad after the tiring season is done. And many who try to serve both with an equal drive often end up with some serious injuries.

Then why not concentrate on the national dream itself? Well, it is true that to win the world cup for his country is every players dream, but to be a failure at a lavish and heavily paying club is his darkest nightmare. No wonder, soccer players are often accused to be more dedicated towards their clubs and not their countries. Maybe a balance should be brought about by having more national matches so that the spirit of patriotism is always alive both in the players and in the fan following.
