Accelerated Degrees – Do Accelerated Degree Programs Have Any Dissadvantages?

Accelerated programs and online education in general have seemingly taken the world of college learning by storm. Millions and millions of students are enrolled with these educational options, and they can provide a wealth of unique opportunities, but there are potential downsides to everything. Take a look at some of these potential downsides and drawbacks to accelerated degrees to see whether or not you’ll want to get started for yourself.

At the top of the list of potential drawbacks is that a faster schedule means more classes and more work in less time. You’ll be working hard, and you’ll be getting a lot done in a very short period of time.

Nobody said it would necessarily be a walk in the park to do this. When you have to think about your family and home life, all of your work responsibilities and the time you spend there, and everything else, then school can be a handful all on its own. Picking up the pace can therefore be just too much for some people, even though it could offer so many benefits at the same time.

Online learning offers many advantages, namely how convenient and flexible it is. Also, the technology has improved greatly over the past few years, providing wonderful learning atmospheres. However, it’s still online and not in person, and this is different than what most of us are used to, and it will never be able to provide a perfect classroom experience no matter how many advancements are made.

Another issue with online learning is that you’re totally accountable for itself. That’s not necessarily bad, but it means that you have to be the one that motivates yourself even when you don’t have a teacher over your back and you aren’t mandated to appear in a classroom once or twice per week.

Studying online for an accelerated program also means you need to supply your own equipment. You need an up to date computer with the right software, and that can be expensive, and you also need a really good Internet connection, not to mention a good place to quietly study and learn.

Don’t forget that not all areas of study were really intended to transfer over into the online realm. Many careers and topics simply necessitate hands on learning and doing, as opposed to reading or viewing things on a computer. Science courses and other subjects that require lab work or hands on training do not work so well online. You really need to be there in person to experience the education first hand. If your interests lie in one of these sorts of fields, than online learning may never be a perfect solution.

So there are certainly a few potential downsides to taking an accelerated program, and taking it online. Nothing is ever going to be perfect though, so you have to weigh the upsides against the drawbacks to see what’s really worth it for you. Millions of students are finding that the positives are far greater than the negatives in this case.
