Cigarette urns have helped scores of businesses maintain a more presentable and sanitary outdoor environment. They keep building entrances and outdoor waiting areas free from cigarette litter. Organizations that rely upon them include office parks, retail shopping centers, public parks, municipal buildings, theme parks, town centers, grocery stores, malls, restaurants, hospitals, car dealerships, and now even bars in larger cities.

Indeed, it was the increasing push to ban indoor smoking in all public places that led to the popularity and genuine need for a specialized form of cigarette disposal. While the ban on smoking brought us the unmistakable advantages of reduced fire hazard and an indoor environment that was now completely free of second hand smoke, it created a few new, minor problems. Smokers now began to gather in front of buildings to smoke, which did not present the best image to clients and guests. Also, with the absence of any type of ashtrays, smokers threw their cigarette butts on the ground.

Cigarette urns solved this problem by giving smokers an attractive and appropriate receptacle for the disposal of cigarette butts. They also made it possible for businesses to clearly designate smoking areas that were discretely out of sight to people entering the main entrance of the building. Restaurants, hospitals, and stores could also setup concrete benches far enough away from the main entrance so that second-hand smoke did not get into the building.

Because they may or may not be visible to the non-smoking general public, cigarette urns are manufactured in two basic designs: post and receptacle.

The post design features a long, hollow pole that sits on a large, rounded base. In some respects it resembles an urn, which is one of the reasons it is labeled as such. The post design is an obvious receptacle for cigarette butts and is a good choice for any organization with a large client base that may contain a number of smokers within it. By making the receptacle as eye-catching and attractive as possible, the organization sends a polite, but firm hint as to where they want smoking limited.

Post-style cigarette urns can be made from any number of materials. The metal urns are designed to hold a greater amount of ash than receptacle-style ashtrays. Post-style models flat bottoms and convex sides that curve toward the base of the post. The interior volume holds a large numbers of butts and can be easily dumped by detaching the post.

The receptacle design with ashtray on top looks like standard a trash receptacle. It makes it less obvious that the organization is providing special accommodation for smokers. While it is a benefit for everyone if businesses do so, some organizations, like family stores, theme parks, and any medical facility are not going to make it appear as though they condone smoking.

These cigarette urns are made of metal and are thermoplastic coated to take a beating from the elements. They can also be permanently mounted through pre-drilled holes in the base. The ashtray sits inside the top of the receptacle, and it can either be filled with sand or left empty to contain extinguished cigarettes.
