Effective Communication During Engagement

Congratulations on your engagement! This is one momentous event in life that is to be celebrated. From hereon, you will now be spending time discussing details about your future as husband and wife. Couples must make an effort to find ways how to communicate effectively especially during the wedding preparations wherein pressure, fatigue and confusion will be overwhelming. Preparation for major details such as guest list to lesser concerns such as bridal shower favors have to be decided on.

When the couple is in the dating stage, communication has been maintained effectively because of the motivation to know more about each other. They key is to have the same zeal and interest in each other even in the years of spending a lifetime together.

Both the groom and wife-to-be must be made aware of the differences in the style and manner of communication between a man and a woman. It can be compared to two people who speak different languages. Men would rather talk in short sentences and leave out details while women can give long answers to one question and include even unnecessary details.

Engagement entails so much more effort on the groom to maintain open communication lines not only with his bride-to-be but with the other members of the family, as well; otherwise, it will be very difficult to work cooperatively during the wedding preparations. It may also say a lot on how the marriage is going to work because marriage only means you are committed to spend a lifetime with your partner. Naturally, that involves a lot of communicating for a marriage to last a lifetime.

Surprisingly, the major contribution that a man can do during the wedding preparations is to stop talking. Yes, silence is a form of communication. Rather than jump in, and force his opinion in solving problems, the man can help more by simply giving his presence and listening to the woes of the bride-to-be. Instead of escalating the problem with a very high probability of conflict in opinion, the bride-to-be may even mellow down with the feeling of support that envelopes her in that stressful situation. Knowing how stressful wedding preparations can be, each one should know when to be supportive rather than confrontational to avoid further agitating the harassed party.

However, it will also be quite impossible for a man to just keep on keeping his mouth shut all throughout the wedding planning and the marriage, too. The important thing to remember is how to communicate effectively. Each person in the relationship must be able to get in touch with his/her emotions and be able to express this, to tell each other how they actually feel to a certain problem. This is, actually, the most difficult part for men as they refuse to delve deeply and would rather rationalize using their intellect.

Pre-marital counseling workshops are available wherein couples, especially men, are taught communication techniques to deal with this common problem.

Transparency – This level is hard to get to – because it has the most risk. At this level, a couple is totally truthful with each other, to the point of complete vulnerability. On this level you show who you really are – warts and all.
