Since the dawn of the mobile phone age, the personalized ringtone has been a staple of the cellphone world. I, too, adore using my favorite songs, tv show clips, and movie quotes as ringtones for each one of my family and friends on my iPhone. I’ve used my fair share of utility apps for the iPhone, and most of them feature either a clunky interface or impossible to use navigation. Luckily, Ringtone Maker is an extremely easy to use application that uses an intuitive GUI so that even complete neophytes can make their way around the app. To use the app, you first load it up after installing it and make sure the songs and clips you wish to use are loaded onto your iPhone itself. Next, you select the .mp3 or .m4a file you wish to use for your ringtone, select a start and end point, and that’s it.

I was quite surprised at how easy it was to use, actually, and was glad I didn’t have to go through any hoops to get my ringtones made. Visually, the app looks fairly nice, with polished yet simple graphics that don’t clutter up and confuse you. I can see this as being great for both the tech Gods and for those who can barely turn on their phone. Aside from assigning a start and end time, you can also use a fade in or fade out feature to make your clip sound more natural and melodic, which is a nice if not necessary feature. There is no limit to the amount of ringtones you can make, either, so this will definitely be an app you’ll keep around for a long while. I spent hours using it last night to create ringtones for each of my buddies, and I can’t see me uninstalling it anytime soon.

I have only one very small complaint about this app, and that’s that you have to sync it up to iTunes to use it. While that is not a problem for the majority of iPhone users, the select few that use alternative media managers might be slightly miffed. Ringtone Maker only allows .mp3 and .m4a files, so those who want to use DRM protected .m4p files or even .ogg files should convert them to the proper format first. This isn’t really a big deal, since they would have to be in the .mp3 format to work properly in iTunes anyway.

Zentertain LTD has priced Ringtone Maker at the fine price of Free, which is absolutely worth the money. They have a pro version available as well, which allows for audio warping features and a variety of custom ringtone lengths. All in all, Ringtone Maker is a great app that’s absolutely worth the download for every iPhone owner.
