Gas Generator – According to Function
Where can a gas generator function? There are several kinds of generators that you can find nowadays. There are generators that are designed with different aspects depending on their efficiency or how their work would be. However, a gas generator is not one of these kinds of equipments that only produce electricity. There are some generators of this kind that needs gas pressure to function. This generator is not applicable on some simple machines.
Gas Generator is used to produce a large volume of gas. It is used on machines that need a big amount of gas to exert a higher pressure to function as a machine. Normally it is used on rockets, which is applied on its motors.
Like other machines there is a cycle for this generator to function. This depends on the machine it will work for. For example is a rocket engine. The number of machines that should be used on a pump-fed rocket is not just a single generator it has to be more generators for driving the turbines of the rocket. This will allow powering up the turbo pumps to let the propellants reach the injector pressure from the tank head. The exhaust of the gas- generator is emitted over-board. The exhaust is not used also for impulsion. Thus, the cycle can be advantageous because it is easy to operate and the design is simple. Then again, this will not be that functional for a higher chamber pressure.
Another use of this kind of equipment is on an automobile, particularly on airbags. You can find the generator usually inside the airbags. There are three mixtures inside the airbag to be used as functions of the gas generator. These mixtures that are present are sodium azide (NaN3), potassium oxide (K2O) and silicon dioxide (SiO2). These three mixtures have their different function to help the generator for the airbag to work. When a car collision undergoes, three chemical reactions happen to the generator in order to produce nitrogen gas (N2) that will fill the airbag and switch NAN3 – this is a very toxic gas for the safety of the glass.
A signal will ignite the generator mixture by an electrical whim that will produce a high- temperature which is an essential condition for the Nan3 to molder. The produced nitrogen gas (N2) will load the airbag.KNO3 and SiO2 functions in removing the sodium metal by switching to a safer material that will not be harmful. The sodium would first react with the potassium nitrate (KNO3) that will make a potassium oxide (K2O), a sodium oxide (Na2O) and an additional nitrogen gas. Again, the nitrogen gas is generated in the second reaction loading the airbag while the metal oxide would react with the silicon dioxide (SiO2) for the final reaction that will produce a silicate gas, which is safe and secure.
Another type of this gas generator is a portable gas generator which is used for conditions in producing electricity. This type of generator is designed with a so called muffler. This muffler is designed to allow the generator to function quietly. This generator is more suitable in terms on consuming fuel when compared to the older models. This generator gives more quality when it comes to usage for the customers demands.
