Helping Your Child Pick Their Halloween Costume

The time of year is once again upon us! Halloween is just around the corner and that means fun and frivolity for all. The autumn season will be filled with parties, school gatherings and other preparations for celebration, culminating in the big night out Trick or Treating.

Halloween is a magical time in a child’s life. It’s the time of year when they get to choose to be anything or anyone in the whole world that they want to be for an entire day. They can be as pretty, or funny or scary as they want to be just by putting on the Halloween costume of their choice. Halloween builds joyful memories that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Of course, aside from going through all the loot they get from their trick or treating adventures, one of the most fun elements of the whole season is picking out that perfect costume. Who or what do they want to be this year? Should they choose to be Woody or Buzz Lightyear? Or maybe the Mad Hatter or Alice would be more fun. There are so many unique and fun kids Halloween costumes to choose from these days that it could certainly be a difficult choice for them to make.

Waiting for a child to make up their mind on what they want to be for Halloween can be trying for their parents, particularly when time starts to run out on the possibility of getting them the costume they will want. Yet, no parent wants to drain the fun out of the choosing process by demanding an immediate decision from their youngster before the child really knows what they want.

This can be an excellent opportunity to help them develop their decision making skills, as well as an exercise in restraint for yourself so you don’t make the decision for them. Instead, you can help them narrow down their choices, by asking them questions about what they are interested in this year. What television shows do they like the most? What’s their favorite movie or story? Are there any characters from those shows or stories that they really like? Maybe their favorite video game character or musician would be another possibility for costume inspiration. The questions may seem basic, but they can be very helpful for a child to figure out what exactly they’d like to be for Halloween.

Perhaps you could make a special trip to the costume store or a date with your child to shop at an online store with them at the computer to look through the costume possibilities. Some parents make an afternoon event of choosing their kids’ Halloween costumes. They make or buy Halloween treats, watch a Halloween themed movie, and then sit down with their child at the computer and go through their favorite online costume shops, and everyone picks out their costumes at the same time. Making a family event out of choosing costumes can only add to the wonderful memories that will forever be associated in your child’s mind with Halloween.
