How to Term Papers on History
Writing a history paper is a skill that you can learn with practice. You can start off with these great tips that are being given to you.
Before you begin to write, the first step should always be to jot down a list of points that you think are important and that you would like to mention it in your paper. You are not at all required to write these points in any specific order; just brainstorm the topics that you have in mind or any arguments that you would like to make in your paper.
Make an outline of all the points. It’s always difficult to start off a paper without knowing what exactly you want to write or what are you specifically required to write. By planning it out ahead, you are almost done with the major part. Seriously, this is the most important step that makes sure that you have started to write a good paper.
Always try to avoid the use of the word ‘I’ in your writing. History papers are suppose to mention the past, and not about you, in the present.
The first paragraph is however, the most important one. This is an introduction about you to the reader, who at the point knows nothing about you so you should be very careful while writing the introduction of your paper. You should however write down the subject of the paper, the topics of argument that you will be covering in your paper and you should also include a summary of your conclusion of just one or two lines which would give an overview of your paper to the reader just in the beginning. This would show the clarity of your thoughts which was there since the beginning of your writing.
Don’t hesitate while creating a number of paragraphs in your paper. However, each of your paragraph should be about a different argument or you should make a new paragraph for any different topic that you are about to write on.
You don’t have to pay for putting up punctuation marks in your write-up! So avoid run-on sentences. Read out loud to yourself, your sentences so that you know better if there is any punctuation that is needed. If while reading it, you have to take a breath, and you have no comma in there, then your sentence needs to be shorter or maybe a comma is required there.
Don’t forget to conclude your points in the end. You are done writing most of your paper – did you reach the same conclusion as the one that you wrote in your introduction paragraph? No new information or a new finding or result should be introduced here; it should however, just summarize the main points of the paper.
Make sure to create accurate footnotes or end notes. These are the common mistakes that mark you get marked down for. Though many students think themselves to be superfluous, they are really just an important research tool.
Don’t forget to check the spellings in your paper at the end. Most of the teachers and professors mark you down an entire grade for just the spelling errors that you have made throughout in your paper. All you do is to click on a button that ensures you to get a low marking grade.
Once you complete it, and you have gone through it thoroughly, read your paper out-loud using all the punctuations that you have made. That means to take a breath wherever you see a comma and pause a little more after every sentence that ends. Though this may seem ‘corny’ to you, you should listen to the way your paper would actually sound to the reader.
You may have a friend or a relative read you paper as sometimes you think you are clever enough to point out any mistakes that you might have made in your writing, but in real, you are not, because you tend to overlook a number of mistakes that may seem perfect to you, but in reality they are poor.
After you get done checking your paper, print in on a clear paper and submit it in. I hope you get a good grade!
An Important Tip
Teachers and professors don’t accept any excuse for submitting a paper later than the submission date. However if the excuse that you are giving is that your printer ran out of ink – even if it did in real, would be the worse excuse that you could make for a late submission. So always make sure you have an extra ink cartridge with you at the time of your submission or you print your paper one day prior to the submission date.
