MAFIA – a Night to Remember

One way to spend a night together with your friends with just a deck of cards is too turn it into a night full of mischief and entertainment. Turn it into a MAFIA card game. This game origin is not really known but it is a game that is really fun to play. The group will act out as a town in which one sheriff will have to find different members of the MAFIA and turn them in.

How to play MAFIA

One player must become the moderator, usually the host of the party is the moderator and he will be the one responsible in handing out the cards to the different members of the group. He will have to memorize all the cards and who gets it so that no one can cheat on the game.

Next will be to identify the meaning of the cards, the group must all agree on the meaning before the cards are distributed.

The red king is always used to signify the sheriff. The sheriff is a special type of player which has the power and authority to capture MAFIA members. He has a special power to ask the moderator “once” during Night Round play which one of them is a MAFIA. He will ask the moderator silently so that no one can overhear them. The sheriff must also hide his identity from the start as to not let MAFIA members know him.

The red Jack can be used as healer. There is only one healer throughout the game and his duties to heal. He can heal himself or another person. As the game drags on and the identity of the sheriff is revealed indirectly, usually the healer will always heal the sheriff.

Black cards are given to the MAFIA members; the coolest member of the game, sleek and cunning with the ability to hide their true nature. During Night Round is the time they attack.

The rest of the cards can be townspeople. Most of the players of the game are townspeople. The game will end if the townspeople are overpowered by the MAFIA.

Now that each of the members of the group has their own identity, it is now time to play the game. Each player must not reveal their identity to another one. Doing so will result to disqualification.

Let’s start with DAYTIME ROUND, all players’ EYES are open and one can start to accuse someone if they are MAFIA or not. MAFIA members must not show any hints that they are mafia. Anyone can start the accusation. He will have to point to someone and start accusing him/her as being a MAFIA. The person accused will have to defend.

Then a vote will be held to whether kill him or not, if the majority of the vote is to kill him then that person will be required to open his card to see whether he is a MAFIA or not. If the vote is not to kill him, then another one will be accused. The DAYTIME Round will end after one player is killed.

After the Daytime Round comes the Night Time Round. Every Player must close their “eyes” to show that they are asleep. Then the moderator will have the MAFIA open their eyes and they will decide which person to kill. This needs to be done very silently as not to give out the identity of the MAFIA. After that they close their eyes again.

The moderator will then ask the sheriff to open his eyes. The sheriff will point to another player and the moderator will say if he or she is a MAFIA or not. And then the sheriff will close his eyes again.

The moderator will now go the healer and the healer will point to whomever he wants to save. And close his eyes again.

Then the moderator will ask everyone to open their eyes except for the person whom the MAFIA had decided to kill, not unless he is also the one that is healed by the healer.

The game continues until all MAFIA are dead or the Townspeople are outnumbered by the MAFIA.
