Traffic infringements can make your auto insurance rise if the insurance company finds out about them.

What should you do? You are driving into the sun. You are going slowly but, due to the light conditions as the sun sets in front of you, the moment you drive passed the traffic lights doubt erupts in your mind. Was that light red or orange? You do not want an infringement for what was a simple error in poor conditions.

Should you brake and back up? If there is a car right behind you, that could actually cause an accident. But if you glance in the mirror and see that the next car has stopped, what do you do. Is that a sign that you were the last car to get through or is a sign that you did run a red light and if you did, should you stop where you are?

I faced just this dilemma recently, and when I saw that no cars had come after me, I stopped and backed up a ways and waited while the opposing traffic came across a charming little one-way bridge and down the road passed me.

But I don’t know if I ran a red or orange light. What I do know is that due to an unhappy chain of events there was a policemen on the other side of the bridge when I got my turn to cross it. He did not stop me. I hope this is a good sign. But it remains to be seen.

Situations like this are very frustrating because, if you are a safe driver and have never caused an accident, it can be very vexing to face a severe penalty for ding basically nothing wrong. Clearly, there were extenuating circumstances, and I was going so slowly that I was able to stop and get out of the way immediately just in case I was in the wrong. But I am mindful that I made myself look to be in the wrong by stopping. Dilemma of dilemmas. I could have been in a much more messy situation had I tried to proceed.

Sometimes it is a good idea to go to the traffic authorities and talk the matter through. This was not an option for me, unfortunately. So I wait.

However, if something similar happens to you, consider explaining your case. I do know people who have explained their way out of similar situations.

One friend was fined for speeding through an area where the speed limit had been reduced on the open road due to road works. But, she managed to have the fine withdrawn because she was able to argue that the wind had blown down the sign notifying drivers of the reduced speed limit.

If you make a mistake and you get lumbered with a fine, pay up and be more careful in the future. Also, look on the bright side. At least it was not more serious and no one was hurt. And, your auto insurer may never find out.
