A well-known city in South Florida, Miami is also known as the ‘Gateway to the Americas’. For those looking to visit Florida, family hotels in Miami are close to some of the top attractions in the state. In 2010, Miami ranked as the United States’ seventh top global city, and ranked as “America’s Cleanest City” in 2008 according to Forbes Magazine, judging the city on its good air quality, drinking water, clean streets and recycling programs. As the number one cruise passenger port in the world, and the busiest in terms of both passenger traffic and cruise lines, Miami has many attractions for a family holiday.

Money and Miami

One of the country’s most important financial centres, Miami boasts over fifty skyscrapers, and the city’s skyline is ranked as the third most impressive in the United States, only behind New York and Chicago. It definitely makes a unique view from the window of your family hotels; Florida has a unique vibrancy that isn’t found anywhere else. It might explain why so many visitors are drawn to the ‘Sunshine State’, as Miami’s beaches, festivals, and other events draw over 12 million visitors every year. The historical Art Deco district in South Beach is regarded as a particular attraction for its world-famous beaches, historical districts, and shopping.

Seen It Before

Many television shows are filmed in Miami, making the city instantly recognizable. It can be fun to relax in your Florida family hotels after a long day and try to spot a few landmarks you’ve visited on the TV! Dramas ‘Nip/Tuck’, ‘Miami Medical’, and ‘CSI: Miami’ are all filmed on location in the city; while both the original series and remake of ‘Miami Vice’ were also filmed there. Miami is also a popular backdrop for reality television shows and, whether you love them or hate them, they definitely show a different side to Miami that you might not be able to see on holiday! The shows that have featured Miami prominently are the self-explanatory ‘Miami Ink’, ‘Miami Animal Police’, ‘The Real World: Miami’, and ‘Miami Social’.

Attractions

There’s a lot going on outside your family hotels; Florida has a lot to see and do, and Miami is no exception! The Miami MetroZoo is a great opportunity for all the family to see their favourite animals – including animals from Asia, Australia, and Africa, who flourish due to Miami’s warm climate. One of the first free-range zoos in the country, the animals aren’t kept in cages, but are grouped together according to their geographic territory.

For the younger members of the family, a visit to the Miami Children’s Museum can be a real treat. Their motto of ‘Play, Learn, Imagine, Create’ shines through, as many of the exhibits they feature are interactive, allowing children to experience settings such as a television studio, a supermarket, and even the ever-popular ‘pet central’!

One park that always raises a smile or two is ‘Monkey Jungle’, where visitors walk through carefully-constructed wire pathways, while many species of monkeys scamper and swing through the trees above, interacting in ways that are difficult to observe outside a wildlife habitat.
