Social Internet Marketing: Do’s and Don’ts
Internet marketing is turning out to be the biggest shareholder in marketing. The reason is that internet is used by the youth more than anyone else. As social websites are visited by millions of users each day all over the world therefore it is surely the right place to place your advertisement, as not only simple ads can be displayed there, but smart advertisements and marketing campaigns can actually propagate themselves and spread out in the wild to other people who are interested. Many companies have found much success in using the social side of internet marketing while others have made mistakes which ended up tainting their image. On the internet, the most important thing in marketing is not having the biggest celebrity endorsements or biggest ad space. On the internet ideas are the king and the company with the best idea wins.
When talking about good internet marketing one cannot ignore Burger King. The company has hired the perfect advertisement agency because they keep churning out the best in internet marketing. After the wildly successful subservient chicken campaign Burger King came out with an extremely innovative idea for advertisement on Facebook. Burger King offered a free Whopper burger to anyone willing to delete 10 of their friends from Facebook. People started deleting friends to get free burgers.
The great part of this campaign was that it was posted on the person’s profile that they deleted 10 friends to get a burger. The even better part was that people who had been deleted were told that their friend loved the Whopper burger more than they loved him. The campaign was so successful that Facebook actually asked Burger King to shut it down because more than 200,000 friends had been deleted which was harmful for Facebook. This is ‘getting’ internet marketing. Burger King created a campaign which their target market loved and used. Burger King has become much more successful in the previous few years due to campaigns like this.
Another company which successfully integrated their television and internet marketing is old spice. Old Spice released a funny advertisement which became extremely popular on You Tube. The website featured a man who said that every man could smell like him if they used Old Spice. After seeing the popularity of the ad on the internet, Old Spice actually had the actor answer questions from the internet. They targeted popular websites like Reddit, Youtube and Digg and answered questions from their users. These answers then got millions of views. By studying their target market Old Spice got a great amount of attention at a very low cost.
Some companies have failed at internet marketing because they did not fully understand the internet. McDonalds failed miserably when they used a popular internet term (I’d hit it) in an advertisement. They used the term when talking about the burger. The term was only used for attractive people and it meant having sex with them. The advertisement got very famous because of McDonalds complete misunderstanding and McDonalds was ridiculed as a result. Before trying to appear ‘internet savvy’ companies must fully learn how the internet works.
