Some Myths About Conception

Just like me, everyone must have heard ‘old wives’ tales and myths on prevention of conception. And surely your mother must have added few of them that she might have got from her mother. Majority of these cures are faulty and not factual. In case you do not wish to get pregnant after having sex, you must not depend on certain things for preventing it.

Withdrawal before an ejaculation is not a remedy at all. One can still become pregnant as the fluid that is present on the penis’s tip before penetration might contain active sperms and only one of it is required to make you pregnant if it is the right time. This is a very big misconception and many people, especially teenagers rely on this.

The other myth is that you will prevent conception when you have sex at the time of menstruating. The fact is that even during your periods there is a chance of becoming pregnant. Everything depends on when did you ovulate in the month and if before your period you had sex. It is possible for sperm to die within 12 to 24 hours if it’s outside the body. However, in the vagina it can live for even 3 to 5 days. Thus, this again is not a trusted way of controlling birth.

The thought that first time sex can’t make you pregnant has been verified to be incorrect several times. It is true and likely. It is possible for a young girl who has ovulated, to conceive even before her first period. This has been proved just by the increasing number of pregnancies in early teenagers.

Just by stopping the intake of birth control pills does not swell your chances of getting pregnant faster. This is a fact. If you take pills for a lengthy duration, it has no relation to your getting pregnant, incase you stop taking them. Once your body is ready only then you will conceive. This is something you really need to understand.

There are still some famous myths about preventing conception. The thought that if you douche right away after a sexual intercourse ‘washes out’ all the sperm is entirely false. The reality is that as soon as the sperm get deposited, they swim rapidly, and are completely out of your reach till you douche. During sex, leaving your underwear on also does not make a difference. Once deposited, sperm know their route perfectly well and no material will come in their way!

In case you are attempting to become pregnant, there is a popular misconception that your chances increase if you have more sex. The fact is that unless you are ovulating you will not be able to conceive, irrespective of how many times you have sex in a day. It is all about the right timing. So, you must never believe anything that you might hear about preventing conception or for that matter, even about conceiving. You have to educate yourself through proper research and reading.
