Use the Power of Pinball to Fend Off the Zombie Hordes
While vampires might be winning in the box office, zombies are all the rage in the world of iPhone games. After the success of titles like Call of Duty: Zombies and Plants vs. Zombies, there’s no shortage of imitators hoping to cash in on some of that sweet zombie money. Undead Attack! Pinball Lite stands out of the crowd, however.
Undead Attack! Pinball Lite is a classic pinball game with a twist: as the player works to earn points and keep the balls over the paddles, waves of zombies stumble down from a cemetery at the top of the screen. If the zombies make it to the bottom of the screen, the game is over, so the player must destroy them with balls and with assorted bonus rounds and power-ups. The game works because it seamlessly combines the advantages of a table top game and an action game.
Unlike many older incarnations of pinball games, Undead Attack! Pinball Lite is fully 3D rendered, so it actually feels like the player is holding a tiny pinball machine. The color palette is dark– greens and yellows, mostly– giving the game the eerie feel of a horror movie. As the game progresses, more and more zombies will wander out of the graveyard, and of course the gameplay becomes more challenging. This is more suspenseful than the average pinball game.
Undead Attack! Pinball Lite is at its heart a classic pinball game, so it’s easier to pick up and begin playing than your standard action game. There is zero learning curve for anyone familiar with real-life pinball: simply tap the left side of the screen to activate the left paddle, and the right side of the screen for the right paddle. That’s pretty much it. When it comes to launching the balls and navigating the bonus rounds, the game will walk you through it.
While the basics of control are great, at times the developer is a little overzealous. Some features seem cool at first, but in practice interrupt the flow of game play. For example, one of the power-ups is a giant spiked ball that the player can roll around the screen by tilting the device, in order to destroy the zombies. It sounds fun, but unfortunately it’s a little hard to follow the action on the screen when your iPhone is moving all over the place. Similarly, some power-ups and bonus rounds require that you shake the iPhone, which temporarily makes it impossible to see what you’re doing.
Even if these drawbacks are not corrected in later versions, they are not distracting enough to hurt the overall quality of the game. Undead Attack! Pinball Lite should appeal to most gamers, except perhaps those who want more of a relaxing gaming experience. Also, the zombies might be a little scary for small children. Fortunately, Undead Attack! Pinball Lite is free and includes the first campaign of the game, so gamers are welcome to try it out before buying the full version. It’s certainly worth the download.
