When Planning A Wedding, Perspective = Success! Success = Cheaper And Better Wedding!
There are two parts to wedding planning on a budget.
One part is trying to collect all the money saving tips you can find, figure out which work for you (as some of them are contrary to each other), and do your best to stay on budget.
The second part is being able to organize and plan … and organize and plan some more.
This article is to set yourself from the outset to be in the right mindset to not only take advantage of money saving tips, but to stay on your wedding planning budget as well!
Here is your important tip: Put Your Wedding Day Into Perspective.
One reason wedding vendors are able to successfully mark up their wares so much is that people are purchasing on emotion.
In general, emotion does funny things. Angry emotions makes you do things you may regret, like walking off in a huff from a friend during an argument, or quitting a project or job because of a heated disagreement. At the same time, happy emotions make you put more effort and resource to obtain something, more than you normally would.
When planning a wedding, the happy emotion is what drives the prices up.
When you walk around a bridal show, the fallback selling points are along the lines of:
“Well, it is the most important day of your life.”
“It’s your wedding day! You want to make sure you remember it in style!”
And you don’t only hear it from the vendors either. You hear it from the bride, groom, wedding party, and family also!
“Well, it is our wedding day – maybe we should …”
If you can take a bit of emotion out of this process, you will be much more effective in bargaining, in planning, and in negotiating.
A lot of people (not just wedding vendors) like to say that “Weddings are the most important day of your life.” And that “You will only get that day once. You want to make sure you do it right”
Well…
Is it REALLY the most important day of your life?
Will you never have another important day?
Or as I joke,
“Are you really saying that it’s all downhill from here?”
Please don’t misunderstand. Weddings are awesome. Weddings are huge. Weddings are something TO BE excited and emotional over. It’s just that when you plan it and budget for it, keep it in perspective.
I really LOVE the “Friends” episode where Monica finds out that her parents spent her “wedding fund” on remodeling the house because “well, we never thought you’d get married”.
So Monica realizes she cannot afford her “Choice A” or even her “Choice B” wedding.
Then Rachel and Phoebe find out Chandler has been saving up a lot of money for a rainy day. When the gals see how much, Monica says “It’s back on!!” for her “Choice A” wedding plan.
Chandler and Monica fight over it because Monica has dreamt of her wedding and Chandler does not want to give up his money for a wedding. Eventually, Chandler gives in saying he loves Monica and wants her to have her dream wedding.
When Monica asks him how come he never dreamed about his wedding, he responded that it’s not a big deal. He likes to dream more about coming home to his wife, picket fence, and kids, he wants Monica to be happy. And that’s when MOnica realizes, “you know what, that is what I want too. Not a dream wedding, but my dream life”
Your wedding is just one day. Your marriage will be a lifetime of happiness.
Keep this in perspective, and you will find that this will give you a ton of great wedding planning help for budgeting out your various wedding tasks.
Again, yes please BE EXCITED! And just keep things in perspective too if
you find your budget continuing to creep out of control. And then come your wedding day you will be even happier knowing you planned a successful wedding on your budget leaving enough money to also start your dream life.
Happy Wedding Planning!
