Why Failing at Exercise is No Big Deal
Have you recently given up exercise because you saw no point in carrying on? Before you brand yourself a failure and feel bad about it, you should know that many people fail with exercise, at the first try. And the good news is that, a lot of them have used this failure as a pillar of success in their next attempt. There is no reason why you cannot do the same.
The first thing you need to do is to pinpoint the cause behind giving up exercise. Once you know where you went wrong, you can take start taking corrective action. Here are probable reasons why you could never get the best out of exercise.
Your general health never permitted you to go flat out. Fever, cold, flu, stomach bugs etc meant that you were in bed more than at the gym.
You had an exercise injury and now feel afraid to exercise again.
You were too busy managing work and family obligations.
You changed jobs, relocated or got married and lost touch with exercise in the midst of these transitions.
You were bored with exercise.
You had no personal trainer to guide you towards your goals.
Any of these causes might be behind the derailment of your exercise plans, but you can always get back on track. After all, there have been a lot of things you’ve faltered with, but persisted till you got success. So, why should exercise be any different?
Here’s how you can start turning your failure into success.
Start being active once again. Whether you have been away from exercise for one month or one year, start with light activity in addition to what your daily routine demands. Make a conscious effort to stick to small things such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator, walking whenever possible instead of taking the car, walking the dog every day, swimming or cycling regularly and so on. This will help you gather mental strength for another shot at exercise.
Get a trainer. Once you have made up your mind, get a good personal trainer. Make her fully aware that this is your second shot at exercise and confess where you went wrong earlier. She can help you steer clear of the same pitfalls and catapult you towards the fulfillment of your fitness goals.
Be open to change. Don’t have a rigid stance towards exercise. Understand very clearly that the only thing important is that you are exercising. It does not matter when, where and how. Embrace exercise by leaving aside these petty considerations.
Don’t try to be perfect. Just because you are trying to make up for failure, does not mean that you can be perfect this time around. Life is unpredictable and can upset the most well laid plans. So have a back up plan ready in case things don’t quite fall in place as expected. As long as your intentions are right, you’ll be fine.
Hopefully, you can start planning you next fitness mission, now that you know that failing once is not the end of the world! All the best!
