It would seem that any building with wood in its structure must be, at one time or another susceptible to termite attack. Even well-known landmarks are not sacred when these little creatures are looking for a meal. However, wherever there is a destructive creature invading, man will come up with a way to keep the pest under control. The old-fashioned method of disrupting the entire house and garden has really gone out of fashion. A huge ditch would have to be dug all around the property and many gallons of toxic chemicals poured in to try to stop the termites from crossing this barrier. Although this worked to some degree, there would always come a time when the chemical broke down and the colony start to increase again.

Long tubes, which act as baiting stations, are sunk into the ground at fixed intervals around the property. The poison that is put into these feeding stations is formulated so that when the termite takes it back to the colony, others who ingest it will die as well. Eventually the food will get to the queen and once she dies, the whole colony will follow suit as well.

This system is particularly suited to those areas where there is a concrete sidewalk since the tubes can be drilled in. It is also good for monuments and any place that is considered historical or highly sensitive. If one is careful at spotting things, many tubes will be seen around monuments and they just look like discs set into the ground.

What the operatives do is to check these tubes regularly to see if the bait is being taken. Where the bait is taken, they will know to keep baiting until there is no more activity. This then means that less toxic chemicals are put into the ground but the pests are still being eradicated. Since all of this is monitored by computer as well, a detailed history is kept of where and when any bait is taken. This will help in the fight to eradicate such pests and usually means that they are shown the door quite quickly.

If one considers what can be lost if these critters get into a building, it is obvious that the cost of getting the work done is negligible. Valued antiques or even support beams are just food for these pests and they pay no mind to what it is that they are ingesting. Even impassable sections are taken care of since they have devised ways of getting to where they want to go. Therefore, exterminating them must be done very quickly.
