Irrelevant Information In A Term Paper
Anecdotal Evidence
Sometimes you may see that there is a need to justify any of your statement or procedure by stating “the instructor asked us to do this instead of doing that.” You might think of writing it more appropriately “we used Microsoft Excel to make a graph of x verses y.” Information such as that is anecdotal and is considered to be dispensable. However, in some cases the omission of anecdotal information can be unfortunate. Papers written in the older literature tend to be more exciting and often sound more informative for those who are not ‘in the know,’ because the researcher can always report how a conclusion was reached, as well as he can reason, including the various side tracks that led him/her to conclusions. The writer can actually tell the story of the investigation process. Modern papers tend to omit such information because the volume of literature is so great that most of us doing a search don’t have the time to wade through more material than what we actually need. Costs of publication are too high to permit the printing of unnecessary information.
A Term paper basically summarizes a study. Is does not identify as to who did what. References to the instructors, fellow students, partners, teams, etc are not appropriate as they are not required. Nor is it appropriate to refer to ‘the lab.’
Unnecessary Background
If you want to state any facts or describe the mechanisms, go for it in order to highlight a point or to help interpret the results, and always refer to the present study. If you think that you are writing everything that you know regarding the subject, well then, you are just wasting your time (and that especially of the reader). Stick only to the appropriate points, and include any references that you have with you to the sources of the background information if you feel it can be important and maybe required by the reader.
Including material that is inappropriate for the readership
You are not required to tell fellow scientists that your study is based according to the field of biochemistry. Your readers should be able to figure that out them as to what field does your work apply. You don’t need to define the terms that are well-known to the intended readership. For example, do you think that there is a need to define systolic blood pressure if your study consists of physicians or cardiovascular physiologists?
However, many of the students tend to make these mistakes in their papers which lead to a bad grade as already the reader has got hundreds of papers to read. Irrelevant information is the last thing that a reader expects from the students. It is always recommended to talk to-the-point in your Term papers so it is very important for you to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant content for your Term paper. Go through this irrelevant material that we have highlighted above and try not to use it in your paper.
