The Getaway Truck – it Does More Than Delivery Work!

We all know the significance of the ‘getaway car’ in the world of crime and we have all watched great car chases on the television. Yet what about the role of lorries in the world of crime? Can anyone remember a fantastic lorry chase in a box office hit? Our larger vehicles tend to be forgotten by Hollywood in the favour of the more glamorous and sleek cars – most people associate trucks with delivery work and nothing more. Yet Hollywood should take a gander at the following real life crimes that have used trucks incredibly effectively, proving there is more to these large beasts of the road than delivery work.

The Great Train Robbery

A recent fire in the Cae Dai 1950s motor museum brought the lorry used in the infamous 1963 Great Train Robbery back into the minds of the public. The famous truck was used to transport the £2.5 million haul the 15-strong team of thieves managed to swipe from the train – now that is a different type of delivery work!

The UK Roswell Lorry

For many years UFO groupies have studied the infamous UFO incident that people dubbed Britain’s ‘Roswell.’ The incident occurred in 1980 near Woodbridge, Suffolk, and witnesses reported seeing strange lights in the sky. Yet last year it was finally revealed that people had not seen some high-tech alien aircraft, but instead had been watching…a lorry! According to Mr. Turtill, it was he and some friends that had been using the lorry for delivery work when it had broken down. Yet it was not any ordinary delivery work – Mr.Turtill was driving a lorry full of stolen manure. In order to get rid of the stolen goods they set fire to the truck, which due to its aluminium body reacting with the fertiliser created some very unusual coloured flames!

The Prisoner Postal Lorry

The unsuspecting driver of a lorry waiting in the Karlau prison in Graz, Austria, performed his delivery work one day with a little surprise parcel amidst his load! A daring Bosnian man by the name of Muradif Hasanbegovic effectively used the lorry in his very creative escape from prison! Hasenbegovic was in jail serving a seven-year sentence for robbery, and was being held in the prison when he decided that it was time to escape. He wrapped himself up like a parcel and had his fellow cellmates post him to freedom by throwing him in the back of a lorry waiting to leave the prison. When the lorry had left the prison, the plucky robber ripped open the parcel and leapt from the truck to freedom. Hasanbegovic is still missing!

One Mother, one truck and a jailbreak!

Convicted armed robber Jay Junior Sigler was rescued from jail by his mother, friends and a large lorry. Incarcerated in the Everglades Correctional Institution in America, he asked his mum to help him escape from jail. Being a very devoted mother, Sandra Sigler and a few of her son’s friends bulldozed their way through four prison gates using a large lorry, picked up Junior Jay, and escaped!
