Tips on Maintaining Good Mental Health

The key to a happy, fulfilling life is to feel a sense of contentment with whatever you have. There are good days and there are some bad ones – you have to accept life and its unpredictability, take failure in your stride and strive to do better in the future. At the same time, work towards a high-quality life, not just in terms of material wealth but also emotional and mental well being. When it come to mental health, only you can help yourself by maintaining a positive outlook and doing the best you can to overcome adversity.

Balance your work life and personal life: Spending quality time with your family strengthens the bond between family members and creates a stronger support system. A family’s support will bail you through thick and thing and give you the strength to face the worst of times. Devote time to friends as well – they will always help you in times of need and boost your morale when you are feeling low. Looking for a shoulder to cry on does not make you a weaker person, but helps you overcome the problem effectively with support and encouragement from your loved ones.

Engage in creative activities: If you are dealing with a personal loss, then keep yourself busy by engaging in creative activities such as gardening, painting, crafts, learning how to play a musical instrument, volunteering with a charity organization. Visit new places, meet new people, interact and share ideas. Attend a music recital or a play. The idea is to take your mind off the grief, boredom or other negative emotions and move on to a better place in your life. You can even engage in social work – such activities give you a feeling of self worth and confidence.

Take care of your physical health: Physical strain and exhaustion can affect your mental health as well. Don’t sit in front of your computer all day- try to get a breath of fresh air as often as you can. Go for a walk in your neighborhood or local park. Exercising, bicycling or playing a sport are other ways to keep physically and mentally fit. Give attention to your diet, cutting out fat, alcohol and cancer sticks.

Create a circle of supportive people around you: If you are feeling low or mildly depressed, the worst thing to do is to stay alone. Instead, get up and go out to seek the company of the people you cherish the most. In general life too, it’s a good idea to stay surrounded by supportive people so that you have a cushion to fall back upon in low times in your life.

Seek professional help when you cannot cope on your own: If you have reached a point where you are struggling to cope with the situation at hand and worries are taking a toll on your everyday life, then you should approach a mental health professional. With the right professional help, you can overcome your problems and get your life back on track.
