Treadmill Reviews – 2 Things You Should Know When Researching a Treadmill

Looking for treadmill reviews? The Internet is great for researching and reading reviews on different treadmills.

You can find user reviews and expert reviews along with detailed pictures, specs and even videos of various treadmills.

And since you have so many options, doing research by reading treadmill reviews can be a great way of narrowing down your choices and making sure you’re getting a high quality treadmill.

Having run a treadmill review website for over 6 years now, I read a lot of consumer and expert reviews. I also have a lot of buyers emailing me with their reviews. But there’s a few things many people don’t realize when researching their treadmill.

Here’s a few things you should know when reading reviews:

#1 Try to Read As Many Reviews as You Can To Get an Overall Picture of the Treadmill

Don’t think that a few poor reviews makes a bad machine – or a few good reviews makes a high quality machine. Try to read as many reviews as you can to get an overall consensus of the treadmill.

Remember that people are more prone to complain than they are to leave positive reviews. So that can skew the review results if there are only a few reviews.

And try to read reviews from a variety of different sites. Most online treadmill sellers are now including user reviews on their websites. And most of these are legitimate reviews.

However, it’s always good to find reviews from as many different sources as you can to get an overall picture of the machine.

#2 Realize The Shortcomings With Consumer Reviews:

One thing people don’t realize is that there are a few shortcomings with consumer treadmill reviews. The first is what was stated above – people are usually more prone to complaining than to praising so this can skew the results of positive or negative reviews.

(So for every 1 disgruntled buyer who had a bad experience and left a negative review online, there might be thousands of people who never had a problem and never bothered to leave a review.)

The other drawback is that oftentimes, if you read the review, you’ll realize that the reviewer has only owned and used the treadmill for a very short time (2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months).

So while they may be thrilled with the treadmill, you aren’t getting a long term view on how well the machine holds up over time. It’s better to look at other things like the brand reputation, construction quality and warranty to get an idea of how well this treadmill will last you – especially if you’re a runner.

For example, I recently read a glowing consumer review of a very cheap treadmill. This guy stated that he loved his treadmill and had run on it 3 times since receiving it. Having heard countless horror stories of people getting injured after running on cheap treadmills, I cringed.

I’d personally tried this machine out and it had terrible cushioning and poor construction – a fact made even more obvious by the short 90 day warranty on it. This buyer might be thinking about changing his review after a few months of running on a treadmill with basically no cushioning.

Worse, he was telling other potential buyers what a great treadmill this was to run on.

So keep in mind that there are a few shortcomings of treadmill user reviews to remember.

So besides reviews, what else can you look at to find a quality treadmill?

Other factors you want to look for when searching for a high quality treadmill are warranty coverage (a longer warranty coverage gives you an idea of the quality of parts used in construction), construction details (like the size of the rollers or the thickness of the treadbelt) and brand reputation.

For example, some treadmill brands have a reputation for high quality construction. Other brands have a reputation for building great starter treadmills under $1000. Others are known for offering the latest cutting-edge consoles and fitness technology on their machines. So it really depends on what you want and what’s important to you.

The important thing is to take your time, look around and do your research before buying. That’s the way to find the best treadmill that you’ll love and will use for years to come.
