When You Should Have Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned

Most of us are aware that carpet cleaning is essential to preserve the appearance of the carpet, to prolong its useful life, and to protect us from deleterious and unhealthy conditions in our home environment. Soil and other contaminants are constantly being tracked into the home. Almost all carpeting available nowadays is stain resistant and comes with a protective coating that will resist soiling and repel staining from spills, but eventually, this resistance will deteriorate.

Soiling will dullen the luster of the carpet. Solid abrasive particles entrapped among the carpet fibers will be ground in with every step upon it, causing excessive wear and eventually, permanent damage. Mold, bacteria, microbes and other pathogens living deep down and multiplying in the carpet, could cause serious health problems.

A regular carpet cleaning and maintenance program is therefore mandatory in order to counteract all of this. The carpet should be vacuumed frequently, perhaps daily if traffic on it is high, but at least once per week. Spots, spills and stains should be removed immediately on detection, and soiling should be cleaned up before it is absorbed into the carpet fibers, causing it to actually change color and look dirty.

All this may be done handily with a good vacuum cleaner and a small portable carpet steamer that may be rented or bought from a home supplies depot, but eventually, the carpet will need to be deep steam cleaned by a professional carpet cleaning company in order to effectively correct the problems outlined above.

Carpet manufacturers recommend that this should be done at least every twelve to eighteen months. The length of time elapsed between these intervals will vary according to the amount of soil tracked in, the frequency and efficiency of vacuuming, and the regularity and effectiveness of cleaning maintenance. For household with pets, lots of kids, and smokers, it may be necessary to have professional carpet cleaning done every six months, and sometimes as often as once every three months.

Remember that carpet is a filter and will also entrap air borne particles. Check the carpet frequently to see if there is any color change. This may be particularly evident near entrances and along traffic lanes where abrasion of the carpet fibers due to soiling will often cause a change in the light refraction properties of the carpet.

A good professional carpet cleaning company will know how to restore the carpet to its pristine condition if it has not been permanently damaged. They will have the proper chemicals, equipment and expertise, and should offer a service guarantee. Find a company that employs the truck mounted deep steam cleaning method and uses solvents that leave no soapy residue.

There are many carpet cleaning companies offering their services everywhere today. Be sure to check out their bona fides and compare with others before you make a decision. You will need to find a company that is experienced, certified and trustworthy. Beware of bait and switch offers that seem too good to be true. They usually are.
