Pedal cars can be a lot of fun for younger children. Retro ride-on toys provide a cool way to motor around, and the pedals provide exercise and help burn off energy from being pent up inside the home or at school. If you’ve recently bought your child a pedal car, or are considering purchasing one, you are probably curious where your child will be able to ride his or her pedal car. The easy answer is any flat surface, but depending on where you live finding a good location for your child to safely enjoy riding around may be a challenge.

In quieter areas, such as small suburbs or rural homes, kids can spend hours pedaling around right in front of the home. Even if you think the possibility of cars or other riders encountering your child is low, make sure they’re wearing proper safety gear, especially a helmet, and that they are supervised at all times.

If you live in the suburbs or a rural area, it may be safe for your kids to ride on the streets and paved sidewalks right in front of your home, but not everyone has that luxury. If you live in an urban area that has lots of streets and not a whole lot of room to play you may want to consider finding a local playground that has some space. A tennis court, basketball court, or even an empty parking lot may be reasonable places to allow your child to ride around in a pedal car. Many schools have large parking lots that are empty after school hours. Be sure to supervise your child anytime he or she is playing in a parking lot, since the danger of cars is something that should always be considered.

Even if you live in a suburban area you may not be able to let your child ride on the streets near your home. Consider talking to your neighbors or local community centers to see if they will sponsor an afternoon or evening of riding in pedal cars, tricycles, bikes, and other ride-on toys. Building a small community of riders and their parents can help increase the number of possibilities and locations for riding. You may also be able to organize pedal car race or obstacle course to enhance the fun.

It may take a little bit of creativity to find a place for your child to ride his or her pedal car, since grass and dirt may not be the most convenient or easy ground to ride on. Grass lots are probably not the best location because of the small diameter of most pedal car wheels; toddlers may not have the leg strength to get up and over bumps in the dirt. When you are looking for a place for your child to ride his or her pedal car consider the potential hazards of a particular area. Avoid areas that are high traffic (either foot or vehicle), and find surfaces that are relatively even and that will not pose a hazard for children.
