A Lot of Beds For Loads of Kids
Walking into the bedrooms of the kids makes me feel like our house is so small. Don’t get me wrong, they are not untidy; it is just that as they are growing up, they are taking up more space. Option one was to set out to a bigger home while option two was to consider space-saving bunk beds. The kids really liked the prospect of buying bunk beds. They got even more excited when they saw countless bunk beds for sale on the net.
I was so astounded; when I was a kid there was a choice of about two beds. I was still a bit nervous about bunk beds although. My children were not uneasy because their friends already had bunk beds. I was nervous though because accidents do happen with bunk beds. When I did my homework, however, I was pleased to learn that safety standards had improved considerably in the last decade or so and life-threatening accidents are now very rare and usually not the fault of the bed.
The mattress would not be sold with the bed, so I found out how to make sure that the two would fit each other. If the mattress is not the right size, a child’s head can slip into the gap when they are sleeping. Bunk beds must also be checked over at least once a month to make sure there are no slack screws or broken pieces of wood. The guard rails for the top bunk of the beds, also had to be present on both sides, not just one.
The ladder was the one thing I was still not optimistic about. An tumble waiting to happen was when the ladder was able to slide along the side of the bed. A ladder that could not slide and was fixed would make me feel a lot better. Even better, was a unbreakable set of stairs. The benefit with these stairs is that a store area was formed underneath them.
Now my kids are reasonably clever and well-behaved. I still warned them very harshly about the dangers of silly play on the bunks. I in fact read some of the accident details to them and then warned them that if they ever put themselves or each other at risk, the bunks would be dismantled and become two separate single beds. So the beds were arranged but then the youngest kid wanted a brand new bed. I had been hoping she would settle for one of the stompa beds from the older kids’ room, but it seemed unfair to insist when new kids’ beds were so reasonably priced.
So we helped her to choose a themed cabin bed with storage underneath. I’m looking forward to walking into the kids’ rooms and being able to see the carpet for once! There is no need to buy the bigger house now. I think we’ll all be perfectly cheerful here for a few more years.
