Airsoft Tournaments – What to Expect

Airsoft guns are replica firearms that fire plastic pellets. The firing mechanism is operated by an electric motor, which operates a piston and spring assembly that launches the pellets. They come in a huge range of styles, from airsoft sniper rifles to pistols to shotguns, and can fire pellets with velocities of up to 650 feet per second.

Airsoft events have some similarities to paintball tournaments. Success requires planning, skill, strategy and teamwork, and people participate because they find the games increase self-confidence, provide physical exercise, and let players enjoy the satisfaction of teamwork. The games are not just haphazard shooting frenzies, but rather scenarios that have specific rules, with safety rules being the most important. Air guns fire pellets at high speeds, and they hurt. Proper eye and face protection is mandatory, and as much exposed skin as possible should be covered.

People who are into airsoft gun tournaments form teams with whom they play regularly, just like you might play on a company softball or basketball team. Like any team sport, the members must learn to work together. Most airsoft gun tournaments have a specific scenario. This means the teams must accomplish certain objectives in order to win, and it definitely does not mean a random free-for-all of air gun fire.

Many teams are happy to find new members and help them learn from their built-up experience. Success means learning how to plan, having patience for the right opportunity to make a move, and knowing when fast adjustments have to be made to a game plan. Teamwork and good sportsmanship make the game more enjoyable for everyone.

If you are interested in participating in air gun events, you will need to find a group and acquire the necessary basic equipment. You’ll also need to learn and follow all safety rules and develop an understanding of how the games are played. Most teams (with the exception of professional and very serious amateur teams) welcome newcomers and will take them under their wing to help them become an important part of the team. You will have to develop a certain skill level before you can participate, and different teams will have different standards.

You should also make yourself well-acquainted with air gun safety and federal laws surrounding them. These guns are not classified as firearms, and are legal in all states in the U.S. However, some major cities have special ordinances pertaining to air guns, so it’s important to know if any of these apply where you live.

The barrel end of an airsoft gun has to have an orange tip when it is sold. Local laws will determine if you have to keep the orange tip or whether it can be removed. Because many airsoft guns look a lot like their “real steel” counterparts, they can and do draw the attention of law enforcement personnel when carried in public.

Airsoft tournaments are very satisfying exercises in teamwork and strategy, and their popularity continues to grow. If you are interested in participating, learn the safety rules, learn to use the guns properly, and join up with a team. Then you too can feel the satisfaction from the planning and execution of a great team strategy.
