Down Comforters Use and Care

The light small feathers on a goose breast are known as the down. These are the warmest and softest feathers on the goose and are the ingredients for down bedding. They provide the warmest insulation for the bird. Other feathers from geese and ducks are sturdier and thus provide more support for bedding such as feather beds and some pillows.

Down bedding is known to be luxurious, and provide you with warmth and comfort throughout the winter. Without being excessively heavy, they are great insulators. Often expensive hotels will carry them as guests expect special amenities in high-end hotels. Many people are first introduced to down bedding in these situations. After having tried it many people often become interested in obtaining their own down bedding for their home.

There are several pieces of bedding that are included in the down bedding category. The most popular are down comforters. These are plush, luxurious comforters consisting of down feathers contained within cotton fabric. They can last many years with proper care and are often passed down from one generation to another.

If you have decided to purchase some type of down bedding the first step is to determine the size that you need. As with other bedding, sizes are typically in terms of Queen, King etc. You may however opt for a larger size if you wish extra coverage in your situation.

Although synthetic comforters often have a lightweight material they really can’t compare to down comforters when it comes to softness and comfort. This is because down is naturally a great insulator but it is also able to breathe so that you never become sweaty during the night.

The biggest drawback to down bedding is the possibility of allergies. Relatively few people have down allergies but it is an obvious deal killer if you are one of the ones afflicted by it. The other thing is of course price. Down bedding is considered premium bedding and is more expensive than synthetic or other types of bedding material.

Sellers of down comforters will often provide a type of warmth rating to give you an idea of how well insulated the comforter is. The tendency for most people is to opt for a level warmer than what they really need. Just remember it’s easy to augment a comforter with a light blanket if it isn’t quite warm enough but it is impossible to make a comforter cooler if it is too warm.

There are a couple of different construction styles that are available for comforters. The “sewn through” style has the down permanently sewn into squares this ensures that the filling stays in place but also has a downside in that it may not appear as plush or fluffy as the other method which is the baffle box construction. The baffle box consists of four sides that are pre-sewn to a filling chamber which is individually filled.
As mentioned before, typically the fabric is cotton and there are of course different thread counts that determine the quality.

Comforter care is pretty simple. Shake out your comforter weekly and air it out once a month to keep it fresh. Wash it in an oversized washer in cold water and dry on low.
