Getting Organized For Lost Key Emergencies

It is inevitable, at some time in our lives, that we either lose an important bunch of keys, or we have them stolen along with our credit cards, diaries and other documents which identify us. When this happens, it is wise to get a locksmith in immediately to change all the outside locks on the doors and windows, if appropriate. An emergency locksmith will usually come out, for a fee, at any time to make sure that the tenant can get in the house, and that they are safe once they are inside.

There are many tips that some people would just not think of when they have a bunch of keys with them. For example, never carry the keys in the same purse or case where identifying documents are being kept. If the whole thing is lost, anyone finding them could just get into the house and take everything. Even putting names or phone numbers on the key fob is not a good idea since people in the vicinity will also have access to the place too.

But once the inevitable has happened then having the name and number of a good artisan at hand is important. Of course, this is one thing that we never think about until the crisis happens. It is better to find an artisan online who lives within the vicinity and who offers a call out service. Even calling them, or calling by, to introduce oneself goes down well since they are far more likely to come out immediately to someone they know.

It goes without saying that these days, it is not wise to leave spare keys anywhere around the property which was normal in days gone by. In those days, leaving the front door key under the mat or a plant pot was normal and people did not have to worry about intruders. However, those days are long gone and no one should participate in this trend at all.

If spares have to be kept at all, leave them with a trusted neighbor or family member so that they can be picked up at short notice. Even if keys are lost and there are spares to get in the house, no one should be complacent enough to leave the job until next day or next week for sure. Once this mistake is made, there is no turning back and something serious could happen.

These days too it is a good idea to have some more secure locks put in than is normal if security is a problem in the immediate area. Magnetic locks seem to be making a mark in the industry and these are virtually tamper proof. This kind, or the locks with dead bolts which fit directly into door frames, make it harder for any thief or burglar to merely break down the door and may be handy for those who live alone or are nervous at night. Windows too should be attended to since this is often the first place that a burglar will look at when trying to get in.
