Help Your Child To Overcome Their Fears

You would still remember when your child was born. Earlier, a family photographer used to capture your special moments on different events. Now, it is a baby photographer who takes shots of your beloved child. The baby-phase is very exciting, but when it comes to parenting as he or she is growing up, you get to learn different things about his or her psych. One of these things is your child’s inner fears.

Dealing with a child’s inner fears is not easy. Many kids will not even like to talk about them. However, it is true that a child will have fears in his or her early years. According to research, children would have different fears according to the age group they fall in.

– Infants (0-2 years) would mostly experience fears of loud noises, large objects and separation from parents.

– Preschoolers (3-6 years) would go through most of the fears. This may include ghosts, supernatural beings, monsters, darkness, noises, sleeping alone, floods, thunders, etc. Largely, they might be scared of imaginary creatures.

– School children and adolescents (6-7 years) would be afraid of somewhat practical things such as fears of physical injury, earthquakes, thunderstorms, floods, health, school performance at school, death, etc.

Once you know that your child has some fears, you need to do something about overcoming them. If you cannot completely control their fears, you have to at least do something to make them feel better.

At first, you need to respect these fears. Never ever make fun of them! Also train your older children in such a manner that they do not make laugh at their younger siblings or their fears. It can also be helpful to talk about your own fears with them.

Children need special attention when they are afraid. This is why you must make yourself available to them when they are undergoing their particular fright. Spend this time with them, and talk about various things in order to divert attention from the fear.

The best way is to communicate. This is a golden tip that works for most of the issues of parenting. Even though this might not be easy, there is no better option than talking about the issues.

Many children are scared about imaginary things. When you talk about these fears, you must try to explain the reasons. For instance, if your child is scared about thunder, teach him/her the science behind thunder.

You should also tell them often about bravery and courage. Every child might have a role model in his or her mind. Usually, it is a brave figure. Time after time, give examples of the character’s bravery, and how it helps him fight his fears. You can also encourage your child on small courageous acts that he or she does.

Fears are not something unusual in a child’s growing phase. Everybody might have some. The only difference lies in the fact that some children are able to cope with them, while others need your help. Make yourself available to comfort your child, and fight his or her fears until your child wins the battle!
