Solar Towers Reach For Savings

Solar powers use mirrors to capture the sun’s energy and store it for future use as power, but they also trap the heat of the earth and store them in their towers, known as chimneys. The idea just makes sense because we need more ways to store solar power and we also need something that doesn’t take up a lot of space.

A solar tower takes up air, really and not a whole lot more than that. It really just makes sense to build straight up toward the sun to absorb its rays and to reach down in the earth to capture the heat from the sun that has already been absorbed into the earth.

The technical name is a solar updraft tower to distinguish it from a solar tower, used to observe the sun. A solar updraft tower is defined as a renewable energy plant.

A proposed solar tower in Australia could cost as much as $500 million to build. Upon completion, it would stand 1 kilometer tall, making it the tallest building in the world. The base of the tower would be a 25,000-acre circle of panels to capture the energy. The tower is projected to generate enough electricity to power 200,000 houses.

The construction of this massive solar tower project just signals one more huge step in the solar power industry and the green movement toward energy. The more often big corporations invest in big projects like to do generate electricity through solar power, the closer the average Joe gets to having affordable, accessible and easy solar energy at his home or business.

When this happens, the green movement will skyrocket and will not only be a thriving industry that employs people, but will be saving the earth’s resources and getting the United States out from the dependence it has on other countries for energy sources. Once our country has attained energy independence, it will be able to focus on other areas to help its citizens. So solar power gives us the ability to not only help the planet and future generations, but the ability to help ourselves now and in the long run.

What is so exciting about this for us is that now there are speculators looking at doing something like this in Arizona. The same company building the Australia tower wants to build not one, but two towers in Arizona. The towers would be 828 meters or about half a mile high, which is as tall as The Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest skyscraper in Dubai.

According to EnviroMission, the company behind both the proposals, the technology behind the solar towers is based on the sun’s radiation. The air under the “collector zone” rises (as all hot air does) and then is blown through turbines. The electricity generated through this doesn’t need any water to be produced. Water is needed for other green energy sources and for classic coal and nuclear energy sources.

It looks like solar towers are the next big step in green, renewable energy sources and this industry is going nowhere but up.
