Taking Care of Curly Hair During the Summer

Summer is fun spent at the beach and under the sun but isn’t as much fun when you have curly hair. Yes, too much heat can damage any kind of hair but curly hair takes the most beating. Heat causes curly hair to get extremely dry making the hair lose its moisture and cause serious damage on the hair cuticles. This results to frizz. While you can’t exactly fight off the sun and heat, there are measures you can take so you can retain moisture in your curly hair.

1. The first and most important step in taking care of curly hair is to have a healthy body. Eat a lot of food rich in protein to help your hair grow and have strength. Drink lots of water everyday to hydrate your hair. Hair tends dry our easily during summer than any time of the year. Take multi-vitamins. Eat foods with omega 3 fatty acids which can be found in Canola oil, tuna, salmon, nuts, beans, olives and dark leafy vegetables.

2. Shampoo your hair regularly. Use a specially formulated shampoo for curly hair. Buy a shampoo that is organic, water-based and with natural botanicals. A reconstructing shampoo works best because it re-builds dry, damaged hair while retaining its color.

3. After shampooing, use a nurturing conditioner with natural botanicals. Conditioners with honey and Gingko Bilboa are excellent because they help bring back luster and minimize the tangles in your hair. Leave the conditioner on your hair for a few minutes while combing it with a wide tooth combed. Rinse off completely.

4. After conditioning, apply a daily mousse, hair butter or a leave-on conditioner. Choose one that is water-based, with botanical extracts and without harmful chemicals to provide additional vitamins and proteins for your hair.

5. After you have washed and conditioned your hair, wrap your hair with the towel and blot it dry softly. Apply a treatment serum or cream while still damp. Work it from the roots to the tips of your hair. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes then rinse well with warm water. This prevents the hair from being damaged due to heat, pollution and environmental stress.

6. Avoid using heating implements on your hair. Let it dry naturally. If you must use a blow dryer make sure it is set on low and it has a diffuser.

7. If you want to style your hair, do it while it is still damp. Use a light spritz of frizz control spray when styling.

8. Have your hair trimmed frequently to remove dry ends. Maintain it at a manageable length so it will encourage the growth of new hair. Avoid hair coloring or processing because it can dry and damage hair. If you must, keep it at a minimum.

To protect your curly hair from the sun and wind, always wear a hat or a scarf. Having wavy or curly locks is always a challenge, but there are ways to solve your hair problems. Keep your hair healthy and you will soon realize that having curly hair isn’t bad at all.
