The History of the VLC Media Player
The VLC Media Player is a player that you can download for free. It was developed over the period of 1996-2009 and is a portable media player, streamer, and encoder that supports numerous audio and video file formats, including DVDs. This Media Player download works whether your computer is based on Windows, Mac OS, or Linux. The VLC player download includes numerous free encoding and decoding libraries, so that you don’t have to find and install a plugin to play a video or audio file.
The VLC download that you can get for free today began as an academic project by students in France. Today, however, its development is coordinated by VideoLAN, which is a nonprofit organization. In the VLC player, almost everything is a module, including audio and video inputs, codecs, and audio and video filters. This makes it supremely adaptable.
One reason the VLC download has been downloaded millions of times is that it can play just about any media file you can come up with. That means you won’t open Windows Media Player only to find that a codec is missing and has to be installed in order to play your file. Additionally, the VLC player has lots of extra features, and a user-friendly interface.
One thing about the VLC player that is very popular is that it doesn’t have the same region code setting problems that commercial media players do. The preview feature inside the player lets you play videos from inside RAR folders before your download even completes. Even if the RAR file is split up into several parts, all you have to do is load the first one and the player will automatically play all of them, in the right order.
You can also stream and download videos through the VLC Media Player, as well as download and save them onto your computer for future playback. The player allows real-time recording for all kinds of media during playback, and lets you convert various audio and video files to files that will work on your iPod. You can get a version of VLC Media player specifically for your iPad or iPhone too.
The VLC player lets you save a playlist file and create bookmarks. The playlist file stores your podcast subscriptions, internet radio stations and local media files. It won’t search out and find all the media on your computer, though. When you play internet radio, you’ll see the artist and song title currently playing in the title bar, which is something you don’t get when you use Windows Media Player to listen to online radio. You do not, however, get music visualizations in VLC the way you do in Windows Media Player and WinAmp.
The VLC Media Player was in beta until 2009, but now that it has been released it has become extremely popular and is consistently one of the top downloads on software sites. It simply takes any kind of media you give it and plays it for you, vastly simplifying things for anyone who loves playing audio and video and doesn’t want to spend a lot of time worrying about codecs or file conversions.
