Pay attention to certain signs that maybe showing from your child, when they start to developing teeth. Examples of these signs include: when your child becomes a bit more irritable, their cheeks start to go red, have a fever, or if your nursing habits start to change or if you are experiencing some feeding problems. Also out for the gums and see if they maybe inflamed, and if there is a diaper rash forming.
What Steps You Can Take Next
Try to cuddle the toddler, as well as nurse your child more than what you would do. The child will probably like this, as they are receiving attention as well. When you do this, you should chose when you plan to nurse your child and have a routine if possible.
Help them, by massaging their gums and do so with your fingertips, as long as the baby will allow you to. Babies will like this motion as they can see that it helps ease the pain. Try damping a cloth and place it in the freezer. Then give this cloth to your toddler or baby for them to chew on. You can also find some other teething toys, and also put them in the freezer or even the fridge, to help keep it cool.
Offer your toddler or baby, some cool drinks or icy drinks, this can help ease and sooth the gums of the child. You should only give these drinks to them if they are at that stage when they can drink other things, besides breast milk. Try and give your child some comfort foods, these can be applesauce or some yogurt, again only when they are old enough.
You should also, wash the area of the mouth of the child, with a towel or tissue that is warm, if you see them drooling a lot. This can prevent the child from having a drooling rash, that can be formed in this process. Find some teething tablets that are either homeopathic or something similar in liquid; families find this helpful in the preparation stages of teething, and use this to help ease the pain. You can also find some gel, that helps with the gums and the tongue to. When you are using gel, use it only some of the time. This gel can either be brought from the counter, or you can chose a natural version that has olive oil in it.
The last option is to give your child acetaminophen or another type of pain reliever, this needs to be approved by the doctor or pharmacist, especially when your child is in severe pain. You should always go to the doctor, when they are experiencing a lot of pain with teething.
Teething can be a challenging time for many, even though it shows the child is growing up, however the negative is that the child is in pain. These suggestion should help and ease your toddlers pain.
