There are many things to consider when you make a website and close to the top of your list should be the creation and management of well organized content. The way your content is organized, the way it appears and the value it offers critical to building trust and a great brand name.

Here are a few tips to assist in making your content a positive visitor experience which will go a long way in setting them up for conversion.

Give them what they want

Keep your content relevant…give the visitor what they are looking for.

Most of your traffic to your business website will come from search engines. Individual pages will be pulled up because the search engine thinks the content matches the intent of the inquiry. Make sure that absolutely is correct.

If the keyword phrase that you are targeting is “big screen TV reviews” don’t make the content a blatant pitch for a TV that you are selling. Visitors are not stupid. Visitors will see this page for what it is and instantly lose respect and trust for your site. Don’t try SEO tricks just to get a chance to pitch.

Make sure when you make a website that your navigation links accurately describe the content they lead to. Double check all of your links and insure that they take you to content that makes sense. If you have a “why use us” link and it leads to a catalog page…you’ve got a problem.

Be consistent in your layout

Every new visitor has to be “educated” to your web page organizational style. Don’t confuse him or her by changing that style on every page they go to. By keeping the web page design consistent you are making it easy for the visitor to locate the information that they are looking for.

Don’t clutter up the content

Don’t add anything to the webpage simply because you think it looks good. Extraneous content is just clutter and it can confuse and frustrate the visitor.

Understand how visitors “read” your content

People don’t “read” web content the same way they do print. Web visitors first scan content looking for points of interest. Remember they started this quest as a search entering a keyword phrase. They will continue seeking out the answer to their inquiry by looking for relevant keywords or words that pique their interest.

In order to accommodate this style you have to use headlines that grab their brains and bolded sub headers that summarize three or four paragraphs. Basically what you are providing is an easy way for their eyes to pick out an “abridged” version of your content. It’s really a kind of Cliff’s Notes approach but it’s crucial to keeping the visitor engaged. Big blocks of text, no matter how brilliantly written just turn people off.

Keep it clean

Refrain from adding color just for the sake of adding color. White space between elements gives a crisp look and makes the content easier to read. How many times have you run across a pitch black web page with 8 point New Times Roman font in white? If you can’t read what’s written why bother to write it at all.

Avoid using a web page background that has images…just way to distracting.

Speaking of fonts and font sizes, some look cleaner and more professional than others. You will always be safe using Arial or Verdana in a 10 or 11 font size. They are crisp and easy to read. Using New Times Roman just says that either you don’t have a creative bone in your body or you are just to lazy to modify the default font on your Word program.

With a little thought and planning you can make a website that tells your visitors that they have arrived at an ecommerce site that is in business to do business. You’re a pro and you value their time and you want to make it easy for them to do business with you. Well organized content is the hallmark of a successful website.
